Has anyone thought about the fact that we don't necessarily know this is a cop pulling us over.....one reason cop cars used to be standardized was so you knew it was an official cop pulling you over. Now we have no idea what they are supposed to look like and could just as easily get pulled over by a bunch of thugs if they slap a siren and horn on their car......
yah wasnt it a couple of years ago that someone was pulling over people over by UCF in some random car and trying to rape people?

My thoughts have changed on this issue...

I used to think unmarked cars on traffic patrol were total BS, but honestly it's not your right to know whether a cop is watching your driving habits.

It's not a camera... there is an ACTUAL cop in traffic, watching you make a traffic violation. Where's the injustice?

Because you "DIDN'T THINK" someone was observing your behavior, who could pull you over and cite you for driving like an asshat?

I'm sorry, but to any rational person, that just doesn't add up.

You choose to drive carelessly or wrecklessly, you get caught, you face the consequences....

They are not targeting imports, or fast cars... I'm sure they're pulling over people driving SUV's and Minivans, too.

You have to admit though, if your in your s2000 going 10over and your next to the minivan doing 10 over he WILL come for you 9/10times. I know I would.

i've been pulled over for going 1 mph over the speed limit. the only reason he had when he asked me how fast i was going was that i had passed him. even though i was doing the speed limit, i passed him and thats "disrespect"
My ex-girlfriends dad drives a dodge stratus as his unmarked car. he is an Orange County Sherriff.

they can if they want, 1mph is illegal, but a lawyer can get 1mph off really easy especially if the gun wasn't calibrated earlier that day. usually they wont pull u over for less than 5mph to account for spedo errors, tire size and even gun errors... but it all depends on the cops mood when sees you.

but i pass cops all the time, it pisses me off when people slow down to 10 below when they see a cop.

[QUOTE=wildcardtrd,Dec 7 2007, 02:19 PM] If this doesn't scream misappropriation of funds, I don't know what does.

This needs to be put to a vote or brought up in the next election. Someone needs to run that has a mind to stop crime by taking police off the streets.
The enforcement of traffic laws versus the pursuit of perpetrators of property crimes is unlikely to be a big issue in any election.

Traffic laws are enacted by and large at the state legislative level. Precisely for this reason, local governments are leary of enacting ordinances to deal with street racing at the munciple or county level: since traffic laws are matters of state law, there is a legitimate question about the constitutionality and the ability of local governments enacting ordinances which ostensibly usurp state law. Some sort of a local referendum will never deal with substantive traffic law issues because the electorate is "distanced" from the adoption of these laws by the legislative process.

Other than being tough on drunk drivers, very few state representatives or senators will ever get elected based on a platform of an overhaul of traffic laws, even assuming arguendo that an overhaul is warranted. It is just not an issue that is important enough to the majority of voters or elected officials

Local law enforcement, however, has considerable discretion in allocating resources to deal with different criminal activities or law enforcement responsibilities, i.e., property crimes versus traffic laws.

I suspect that voters will also have a very limited impact on the enforcement of traffic laws through the election of state attorneys or sheriffs. What gets law enforcement officials elected is their perceived toughness on issues involving violent crime and drug enforcement. After all, more people are concerned about the murder rate in Orlando than how many speeders are ticketed by police officers, sheriff's deputies and FHP troopers.

As for your closing point, I am also not sure how "taking police off the streets" will stop crime. I suppose that a corollary to this argument would be that you would be fine if the police were left on the streets so long as they were instructed to ticket no one and to arrest no one. Like McGruff says, that will take a bite out of crime.
