Default DECALED CARS USE CAUTION

I was removing the phone number on the rear bumper today and there was some residue left behind. After scrubbing with goo gone I realized it wasn't residue at all. I was MISSING CLEAR COAT. The clear coat pulled right off with the decal. It probably bad paint on the car or something. This is really disappointing. I have to get my bumper repainted now.

Anyone know a good paint shop that can reclear a bumper the right way for cheap?

I am done with stickers. This S--t really irritates me.

Rob- SPGP better not give me crap about my rear bumper on sunday. I might go off the deep end. I am not blaming them but after the crap we have gone through for this event I am just really frustrated. It isn't very noticeable from more than a few feet away.

Kalibo,
I feel your pain. That is so misfortunate. I peeled off some of mine tonight with no problems. They did seem a bit tackier than last year. I am really curious:
Did you apply any wax to your car prior to decaling?

Condolences,
Thraak

Just for the sanity check...........

How long have you owned your car? Can you validate for a fact, that the car has never beed re-painted for any reason whatsoever? I believe I read that yours was a 2003. Do you currently garage it now, did the previous owner do the same? 5-6 years in the baking sun of Florida (even with proper wax) can be come an issue with adhesion and longevity. Frankly, there are just too many other factors that could have possibly contributed to this unfortunate circumstance.

After three years of this opportunity with the folks at SPGP, I don't think that I have ever heard of anyone else having any issues with this low impact release product. We'll all find out together soon enuf .....

The reason that I ask is that I used to custom paint cars for a living. AND, by far, the majority of body shops do not do the proper prep work necessary when prepping a car for a re-sale. Sure, the paint matches, but..... the chances of a piece of masking tape or decals going over their work are slim to none. The quality of paint from Honda is not world reknown, but it by far above the standards of most mfg's.

Not trying to stir up drama, but everyone who puts something foreign on top of their paint needs to be realizing the possibility that this may cause this situation that you are now in. Decals, clear bras, etc .......

Thanks everyone for the condolences.

Scott- I think the bumper was repainted once before. I did wax it just before decaling. In your opinion would it be worth having the whole bumper repainted or just recleared?

I am not blaming spgp or the decals. I just want everyone to be careful. The above comment about spgp was more towards them giving me crap because of the bumper now.

Try using a blow drier to heat up the decal, it will soften it enough not to take the clear but you still need to use patience. Good luck

darn tough call ..............

I have always been in opinion of painting an entire part (bumper, fender, etc...) But the hard part of blending is that you have to bleed some of the paint onto the other parts of the car. However, when it come to Clear Coat, the real secret lies within the painter himself and the atmosphere that he is in painting in.

A huge majority of these "spot painters" come to the dealerships as 3rd party sub-contractors and will "fix" the situation in almost any type of condition necessary to satisfy the dealers needs to sell the car.

Personally, I am old school. Spray what needs to be covered and then wet sand, buff, wet sand, buff until you acheive the result that "wows" the client.

**Oh, and by the way, did anyone tell you that silver was the toughest color to blend? Ask Rob about the three levels of Silverstone from Honda, depending what year your car was made.....
