[QUOTE=MYS2KI,Dec 13 2006, 11:45 AM] But for the sake of argument all these cars have been discontinued. I think the S is on life support (brain dead) right now but the parents in this case Honda won

XGA, I wish that was a reality. A coupe S2000 would be the bomb-digity!!!!!
Brian if the XGA was going to be the next GEN of the s2k that would be kool that will help out w/ the whole cutting the Top to take out our seats and stuff. I like the way the S looks right now but i think it would look good as a coupe too my .07 cents. baby
im pretty sure the s2k will be around same as nsx..
they spend sooo much money doing R&D (research/development) that they have to produce it for that long.
all the $ goes into designing all the parts.. cause its a RWD car from a FWD company they have to make all these special pieces never before made.. so lets just say they spent 10billion in the beginning.. theyll make them until they return back their 10billion or get close..
its the theory of (dwindling returns) (i cant think of exact name... damn finance classes)
anywho... to understand better...ill make the amounts smaller.
just say you paid 100$ to design a bottle cap.
and now say it costs you 1 penny to make the cap, and on each cap u make 1.3 cents.
so... with each cap your making a profit.. .3 cents which is VERY small but its still a profit.. but in the overall spectrum even if u sell 1 thousand caps, (3$) your still 97$ in debt. so to make a profit in the long run and make it worthwhile.. you have to sell a total of 33,333 caps to break even.
you cannoty continue to produce the same cap year after year because the demand will decrease to the point you dont have any demand.. so honda changes the design very minimally (cheap changes) every 2 years so the product shows some difference this way people will be inclined to buy new (honda new sales) rather than buy used (used doesnt affect honda cause they already made it)
so... in a nut shell to pay for everything they spent... they will continue to make the car most likely for another 5-7 years.. making slight changes every 2 years. this is why the NSX was out for so long..
its simple business math, this is also why US car makers are always in debt because their product sucks and shows horrible quality. so they have to change the lineup more often to fool people into buying another "new" car... instead of making a good product and changing it slightly,.. they make a poor product and put the$ into making big changes frequently. Japan and other asian countries have always been in the front of the line when coming to making automobiles..
US carmakers make the ideas, and then asian companies develop ways to use their commodity (workforce) to make the product faster/batter/cheaper. we USA have many resources that other countries dont.. but the resource we dont have is people who work hard and care about their job..
if you wanna learn more w/o a bias view go on historychannel.com and buy the modern marvels video of carmaking.. explains about henry ford and then how american car makers almost went out of business when honda came out and made a much more superior product cheaper and faster.
