Default Powered by Honda...owner?

Honda's latest attempt to infuse the brand in every transportation mode. Honda Powered by Owner...personally, I'm flattered that Honda want's me to power one of their vehicles.

I own a Calfee road bike and a Litespeed time trial bike, and I am very brand loyal and dealer loyal. I don't ride mountain bikes as a rule, but I have a lot of friends who do. I think it will be tough for Honda to do battle against the established names. BMW has tried it and never really hit the mark. Most riders who spend big bucks on frames or frames and components buy established brands--not some frame labelled with a car company decal. The closest and most successful tie in between any car company and bike company is probably Colnago and Ferrari, and it is Colnago that manufactures specials in Ferrari livery. (The real tie in is that they both use the same carbon supplier). It would be interesting to know if Honda even has anything to do with the design or building of the bike. Honda has a real uphill battle.

I did not forget about Peugeot. There is no longer a bike brand known as Peugeot--not sold since the 90's I think. The major French hi-end brands now are Look and Time. Peugeot in fact has not made bikes in one of its own factories since approximately the late 60's. Since the 70's, the bike name had been licensed, and the frames were built by another company. Even now, a lot of frames are painted or decaled so they look like a bike built by another company. This is similar to the Litespeed deal with U.S. Postal and Trek in the 2000 Tour de France. Trek did not build a time trial bike at the time so the team and Armstrong used a Litespeed Blade painted in U. S. Postal colors and decaled as a Trek.

$8,000.00 for a Litespeed Blade time trial bike...I wish! A set of Zipp 606's with Verdstein tires and tubes and a Dura-Ace 10 speed cassette lists for over $2,000.00 alone. Add that to the frame, seat, pedals and computer, and $10,000.00 starts coming up pretty soon.

Gees...if I didn't have my bikes...I might be driving a Ferrari.
