Is there a 'pre-stretch' or heat process for OE fasteners?

sorta... but not really.

"8. Install the rod caps with hearings, then tighten the connecting rod bolts in sequence to 18lb-ft"

"9. Tighten the connecting rod bolts and additional 90deg"

nope

once they are installed they are basically "set" into that build. if you have to remove them you need to replace them. That is why I went with APR with my last motor build.

I know the manual says that ... but i'm thinking back to an old Honda builder i knew and he was pretty sure there was a 'standard' for using any fastener even if they have been pre-treated (heat/cycle). I've seen a few examples of when the manual doesn't mention an established process.

who really knows

I've heard a few old-timers say that the new pre-lubes for those fasteners are not a replacement to the traditional 'pre-stressed assembly'.

John ... are you sure it's 'rod-knock'? And, does the F20C have a crank-shim/lateral load bearing?

It sounds identical to what my other motor sounded like when it started acting up... so yea, i'm pretty sure that rod knock is the culprit. We'll find out for sure on Monday.

And yes, the motor has thrust bearings.

Thanks Scott... The only problem is that i don't really have the $$ to buy a whole new motor right now... i've spent way too much on the car in the last 2 months not even sure if i can afford the rebuild if it needs it. Depends on what i see when the pan comes off on Monday.

[edit]actually, give me a call when you get a chance scott... i'd like to discuss some options.. 407.252.9824 Thanks!
