Default Sales tax on Temporary Tags in FL?

Hey guys, I'm planning to buy a S2000 in Florida and driving it back to California. The thing is, Florida requires you to pay the 6% sales tax in Florida before they even issue a temporary tag to drive the car out of the State.

Is there anything I can do to avoid this? I'd have to pay 6% sales tax in Florida, and then another 8% sales tax once I make it home to California.

If you can't register it in FL without paying tax, you're going to have to pay the tax in order to drive it. Not sure what way around it you're looking for but I envision anything would be illegal.

You could avoid the double tax by shipping the car to CA but then you'd have to pay shipping.

Suppose you could buy the car in advance, get the title and register it in CA prior to flying to FL?

Thanks guys. I called the DMV and they said that they'll accept the difference if I paid sales tax in Flordia.

And risk going to jail, "tag attached not applied". Better off with no tag. Ask me how I know

Correct, that's what happened when I purchased my s2k in florida and got temp plate, then when it was time to register it in NY, I paid the difference in tax.

Another option may be to borrow a dealer tag from a friend and say you're being hired to transport the vehicle back to California.
