Debating getting clear side markers and debadging...wondering if tail-light paint could be used to effectively tint that markers to appear smoked, but still translucent. If so, maybe a light sanding, couple coats of paint, then maybe couple coats of clear (depending on the paint). Anyone know where to get tail light paint locally?
Also, does anyone make clear inserts for the headlights (to replace the amber) that could be 'tinted' to have a smoked look? I am a big fan of ridding one's vehicle of all amberness, but personally don't like the way the headlights look with the dark surround then a big chrome area that used to be covered by an orange lense.
To that note, I've also been debating removing the windshield tape. I think it'll look good with the top down, but with it up I'm afraid the white will contrast with the black top a little too much and seem out of place. Anyone around here have a GPW S2000 w/out the tape? Have yet to find a pic of one with the top up and no tape.
Another consideration...painting the stock wheels. I like the way they look black...would a little light sanding, a few coats of gloss black, then a couple coats of clearcoat + wax do good and last a while?
I also have quite a few swirls and imperfections in my paint that need to be dealt with. Problem is I don't have the money for all the required polishes, glazes, sealer, etc (or even a PC for that matter). Soooo, might anyone have the equipment and skills to help a fella out? Buy ya dinner or something...
I have this itch to modify...I have left NO car I've owned stock. I guess not having money for real mods makes it hard
Rick a site sponsor sells the smoked side markers and replacements for the amber headlight covers here are pictures with mine installed. these are clear not smoked. They come in about six different varieties depending on the pattern in the plastic and whether smoked or clear these are usdm clear.
I would have wheels powder coated instead of paint, it is more durable and looks better when finished. Someone just mentioned a place in Tampa for about $40 per wheel.
If you clear the headlights then go with clear sidemarkers viseversa if you go smoked then do smoked sides. Personally I think clear would look better on white. Color matching the internals on your headlights or getting the chrome JDM lights would look tough as hell too
BUT, if you like the smoked look, then take it a step further and get the 3M smoked film for the headlights and tail lights. I would get the clear JDM diffusers and install them with the smoked film over the whole light or go naked (no diffusers at all)
I would even consider tinting the whole front windshield with like 25-35% (like Jeff (Jcarlton) did. Doing that will carry the theme over to enough of the car to make it look...more finished or deliberate.
I have a set of painted wheels, I would sell them to you if they were not spoken for already. Def. wait till you have the cash to powdercoat them. Much more durable and no drips or runs .
The windshield tape idea has been discussed all over the site and most people find that no tape looks great with the hardtop but it looks out of place with the soft top up. Honda spent a lot of time dealing with the look of the car when they designed the S, I feel they made a good decision when they blacked out the windshield frame. The car looks more sleek when the top is up with the tape in place.
Keep us posted on what you decide. If you need ideas, PM or call me
My first two free mods were the windshield tape and the shift boot ring. The tape off looks good on Silverstone but not sure about GPW. The shift boot ring was scratched on my car but I found out that if you take a little nail polish remover to the metal, you can strip off the coating to reveal a dark chrome metal underneath. This only works for 00-01 models. They changed from a metal to a plastic later on since the scratching was an issue.
There's lots of free/cheap mods out there. Just keep checking out S2000 Talk. Or think of ways to improve your car on your own. Troy was the king of this stuff. My favorite on my car -> plastic funnel + plastic tube = ram air intake.
Thanks for the advice. This is the first vehicle I've owned that I've been hesitant to mod
Looking at it last night smoked markers with the side S2000 badges is the way to go for me, along with smoked headlight inserts. Theme of the car is going to red/white/black. Might even paint the stock Honda badges gloss black. On my STi I debadged it fully, cleared the headlights (on my father's WRX as well), and changed my pink I badge to black. Here are some pics:
Then I traded trunks/wings with a guy and had to debadge again
If you go with the smoked side markers and diffusers, you might want to think about changing the S2000 emblems to Black Chrome. I think it would good on your GPW.
I think Smoked goes nice esp with GPW..... it makes the hole headlight look uniformly dark. With smoked sides and black chrome emblems/sides, it would look very clean. Check out Duff000's GPW it looks

Zeems, that's exactly what I'm talking about, along with smoked side markers. Where to buy smoked headlight diffusers?
As far as the H emblems, I'd rather paint the stock ones black instead of the aftermarket/JDM style...idk, maybe I'll change my mind later. $70 can buy a lot of paint!
