Default Some advice?

So my engine spun a rod bearing awhile back. Its been out of commission for awhile, but I bought an f22c longblock last week and am having the swap performed this weekend.

Anyways, basically this is going to leave me with a bare f20c longblock. Other than the spun rod bearing there is nothing wrong with it (as far as I know), so its not completely worthless I'm assuming even as-is.

Obviously though I'm sure it'll will be worth more if its fixed and working... but what will that cost me? Obviously a lot less than when it was still in the car, but how much less... Will selling it when its fixed be a net-gain of more money?

These and many more are what I'm going through right now...

So can you guys give me some advice?

What should I do? I'm lost here. I'm not looking to make a killing, but every penny I make back will go towards paying off my debt for getting the car fixed... so I'm trying to be smart about this...

Any help/tips/tricks/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
-Will

NOTE: This IS NOT a for sale thread. This is an advice thread. If you're interested in the engine you'll have to wait until I become a member and post it up (probably within the next week or so).

my advice ... is even a 'fixed' motor is hard to sell without some actual driving miles on it. It may be best to just document the problems with the motor (lots of hi-res pics of the affected area) and try to sell it that way.

OR! Buy an S2000 with a bad motor in it (cheap), fix your motor and install it in the car. Drive it for a few weeks with a proper break-in. THEN try to sell the car. Essentially you're 'job' as being a mechanic on the side will pay off.

hope that helps

How much do you think the motor is worth as-is?

I don't have the money to buy another car...

without seeing the pistons, piston walls, crank shaft and valve area it hard to say what damage you have on that engine.

rebuilding it will take a lot of money and time. you will put more money into a tear down and rebuild than the engine is worth unless you do it all yourself....if you do it yourself, you have to figure out what your time is worth...at that point you might be still opertaing in the negative.

my best advice is to contact the local shops and see if they want the engine for a project or for parts. tell them you want to sell them the whole deal "as is" and see what they offer. keep the engine intact....the more of the extra parts you can include (valvecover, intake, throttle body etc...) the more the engine is worth

do not expect anything close to retail for the motor. Under 1000.00 is where I would put it and that with all the support parts.....

I was told the cost of putting the new engine in would not be much more than rebuilding the old. I ran the numbers and they seemed to agree.

In addition obviously I get a newer, (arguably) better motor with barely any miles (23k).

Lol thanks...

Well for conversation sake, lets say the pistons, cylinder walls, valve area, and everything except for the crankshaft (and obviously the bearing and other small parts immediately damaged with a spun rod bearing ---- I'm not exactly too knowledgeable about this) is in good condition still (basically nearly the best case scenario I'm guessing). Lets also say the crankshaft is not damaged too bad... only to the point of where it will need to be polished, but be ok after that.

So, with all that said... what would it be worth then?

I think you should give a couple performance shops a call and give them this information and see what kind of response you get (even if just to give you an idea of market value if they were looking.)

I've seen a few eBay auctions go for less than $3000 as a complete swap including transmission (high mileage.) Longblocks may only get $1500 as a running unit.

Good luck trying to get all the numbers looking right. It is a moving target ... for sure

The S2000 scene up here in Tallahassee is virtually nonexistent. I'm pretty sure any local performance shops I called would laugh at me...

I don't need an exact number of what its worth... I'm just looking for a ballpark of what the bare longblock is worth as-is.

One of the reasons is that I'm thinking of offering it to the mechanic working on my car in lieu of the rest of the payment for the labor (probably going to owe him an extra ~$425 on top of what I paid him up front), so basically it'd be like selling it to him for ~$425...

Problem is I don't know if its worth way more than that (like ~$800+) or only a little more (like ~$500) or less (like ~$300.

If its worth substantially more then it'd be kinda stupid of me to do that... if its worth less then I'm afraid I might offend him (which I'd rather not do)...

Basically I guess I'm hoping you'll tell me that its worth ~$500 as-is, since it would save me a lot of trouble. I have the money to pay him... but I honestly would rather just get rid of this engine and keep my money... even if I lose a little bit (~$100) on the deal...
