I dont think 500 is out of the question

if the walls and cylinders look good, the head is intact and the valves etc are good, then the crank, bearings, rods (and the decking needed to properly fit a new head gasket) should really be all thats needed as far as repair.

if it is a paperweight to you and the mechanic is willing to absolve the rest of the labor costs for it then I would jump on it.

It saves you the hassle of selling it and it will get him a decent return when he puts the labor and costs into fixing it.

try the local shops here in our area...we always need engines down here

I would think the head (assuming it is undamaged from the other motor issues) would be worth $500

If you like the mechanic and his/her work ... I'd say it would be a fair trade in value

Agreed. He might just need the money though. I'll suggest it to him, and I guess I'll just have to see what he says.

OH I mis-read your earlier post

I thought the offer was already on the table with the mechanic.....I would expect he would rather have the cash....with this economy right now I am sure he looking for steady cash

I would still try to offer it but dont be let down if he passes.

Yeah I'm thinking the same thing. I'll understand if he just wants cash, as I'd do the same thing.

Like I said, I'll just have to offer and wait and see what he says.

If the cylinder is scored then sell the parts. If the cylinder can be honed then you can rebuild it and make money.
