Default What do I do about these tickets?

I was cruising through my neighborhood coming back from the store and I get rolled.

He says I was going 36 in a 25 zone and have an illegal cover on my license plate. I tell him I just had gears put in over the weekend and my speedometer is off. He doesn't care of course. What's crazy is there are speed bumps in the road that keep you from going fast. I have no idea how fast I was going.

The guy was an ass, and had probably been sitting waiting all day for someone and decided to pick me...

Speeding - $191
Plate Cover - $80

I have 4.77 and I have not adjusted the yellow box to fix the speedometer yet. It's probably about 8mph off.

Should I get an attorney?
Should I have my shop write up something about the gears?

This is my first ticket in Florida. I have never been pulled over before for a citation.

Thoughts?

Pay the ticket, remove the cover, get the yellow box and be done with it.

bottom line is: where you speeding? yes. If the cop has you on Radar then your SOL, as long as he shows up to court. An Attorney might be able to keep the points off though.

This is and will always be about money..............they want the revenue, you don't want the points or the speeding on your record. The attorney is the person who can make that happen.

If you are OK with the conviction then go ahead and pay the fine for speeding. If not then the attorney is the correct route.

As for the cover on the plate, give me a break! While it may be illegal why don't they spend more time writing tickets for illegal window tints and or people not using turn signals. Both of those are far more dangerous to all of us.

WOW!

Was this Tampa PD? HCSO?

I would definitely contact the attorney, at the very least they should be able to make the plate cover citation go away with proof of corrective action.

That is one Damm high fine for 11 mph over!!

You need to go and get your speedo check out to determine how far off it is. I would agjust the yellow box to read even farther off get your speedo checked and correct it. Get paperwork from them stating it was off and now corrected.

Remove the cover and take a picture of it with the cover off. Explain about you gears and show you have it corrected. Show the picture of your car with the plate off a explain how kids or someone has been peeling off the registration decals and you put the cover on to protect it not knowing it was illegal.

Explain you were wrong in both cases either get a lawyer to explain it to them. I would do it myself and pray for a fair judge.

You have a legal responsibility to assure that your vehicle is in proper running condition. Your post is an admission that it wasn't. You also didn't help your case by admitting to the officer that you had your gears changed and your speedometer was off. Remove the plate cover. This isn't a case you want to fight, and move on with your life.
