Well the HD-DVD player is already owned and my collection is up to 23 movies. The house will come next and then all we need is the TV. Maybe if we stopped spending so much on our cars.....oh well

It's never "done".

I my 42" LCD Vizio TV (1080p) + HD DVD player. I just got my Christmas gift from my brother which was 3 HD DVDs... one of them is Transformers the movie.

Once you experience HD, you'll never want to go back... but fair warning that the whole audio/video thing is pretty damn addictive. It started off with a 37" LCD tv, now I have a 42" LCD, HD DVD player, Hardon Kardon receiver, JBL speakers and a ton of various HDMI + optical cables.

Even when you think it is, you'll always find something else to upgrade

Since we're on the subject of home theatre: how does HD DVD compare w/ Blu-Ray? I didn't like the 1080p Blu-Ray Sony set-up that I saw - it looked 'artificial' to me

I don't watch DVDs exclusively, & there's so little decent HD programming on cable that I find myself questioning the real value...

Well, that's the huge debate these days. But basically...

HD DVD = Toshiba, Microsoft, XBOX, Adult industry
BluRay = Sony, PS3, Blockbuster

Quality is pretty much the same, although BluRay can hold more data on their discs. Price of the DVDs are the same but HD DVDs have been priced competitively for the last few months making it very affordable to own one. That's why I picked up an HD DVD player on Black Friday... for an Toshiba HD-A3 (1080i not 1080p) and 7 HD DVDs for $170. Each HD DVD/BluRay is about $20-30 but there are plenty of deals going around (buy one get one free, half price, etc).

Thanks for the explanation Keith.

I passed on SACD vs DVD-A .. think I'll sit out HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray too - for me it's more about the content than the resolution.

After all, crap in HD is still crap
