Looking at getting 4.57 gears installed
Hey, I am considering getting the 4.57 gears installed, and I am not sure where to go for installation. I live in S. Illinois (carbondale) and I'm looking for some good shops for basic service also. I am not above travelling to the St. Louis area either. It's about 1 hr drive I guess. Thanks for any help.
Your requested gear switchout is something that I would not trust any shop to perform. Most of us work on our own cars, but have yet to do one of these. It's not to say that it is to hard to do as many of us are pretty hand with a wrench., just have not had the opportunity yet. A few recommendations I would give.
1) Become a member of the Gateway Community. We are currently sponsored by the local Honda dealership and with your membership a labor discount of $26/ hour would apply. Hence instead of $96/hour, we would get the employee rate of $70/hour.
2) If you purchase your gears from Ricks, you could send your entire "pumpkin" to him and have him do the switch for you. Don't know if this would be cheaper or not once you include shipping costs, but the skill is there to do the job right.
3) We are also semi-sponsored by a local tire/wheel distributor who does fantastic work. He has not yet switched gears on a S2000, but I know that his shop has done rear end work on other vehicles.
In my opinion, I would go with option #1 or #2. Sorry I don't have more for you

Cool, thanks alot. How does one become an official member of the gateway community? You guys should have a lot more members for this area. But I guess not a lot of people really know about this site. Thanks again.
I don't think anyone in our group has enough experience to change our F/D gears. I know of a place in Missouri that does excellent work. They did my friend's cobra for a really good price and the work was flawless. I'll find out the name of the place and get you a phone number.
I did my gears in Nov-2002. The place was on Watson Road, but I can't remember the name. If you're still interested, I dig into my files & see if I can find the name.
You will need the Yellow-Box for the speedo correction. It's a self install...easy & simple!!
