VAFC tuning
So I've read there may be as much as 20hp locked in my 00. Were would I go to get the car "tuned". Would I need to travel to Chicago or something? Anyone had there car dyno'd here in MO?
I've had my car dynoed numerous times at Lightspeed Motorsports (no longer around) but tuning the VAFC is fairly easy. It's not rocket science. You need a dyno + wide band O2 sensor to get your air fuel ratio. After your first initial pass, you'll know your current AFR (air fuel ratio) and based on what your target AFR (usually 1:13.7 - 1:14.1), you'll make the fuel adjustments accordingly. Typically, you'll be leaning it out. Results can vary... I've seen nice gains from tuning and in other case small gains.
Here is STLPC member's first and last run on the dyno after tuning. He had a header, exhaust and VAFC. The last run was with a bit of tuning that I did on the VAFC. He gained about 9 peak whpr and 3 ft-lbs of tq. But his mid range is the biggest thing

Rather than go the VAFC route, I went the cheaper route and installed a '02-'03 ECU in my '01 today. Not many miles yet, but it does seem to run noticably better in the lower gears and shifting seems to be less effort. Until I dyno it, it'll be hard to tell just how much increase the newer ECU added (which will need to be soon or forget it, the high altitude will kill my HP - may it rest in peace ..... anybody up for a quickie dyno day?). I originally thought a VAFCII was the way to go, but read too many threads on having to retune frequently, so unless you have frequent cheap/free use of a dyno, it may not be the best route to go.
keith- that is impressive to say the least. Swaping out ECU's seems interesting, but for some reason having tuneability seems better. Do you have to dyno tune? can you tune by running up and down a road? If there is 20 some odd hp to be had with a tune, I want it. Has anybody in STL done this to their S2000?
Thanks Keith! I guess all I need is a VAFC and wideband sensor/guage. Oh yeah, dyno time would be nice. What do you think of this: http://www.apexi-usa.com/product_electroni...tail.asp?ID=260
Can you notice any advantiges in the neo over the VAFC? Are you planning on doing this to your S? SInce we have 00's, we could be...inadequate in the power department

Great info man. If my finances are how I think they will be after Christmas, I will be taking you up on this for sure. BTW the OEM lip looks real nice on the car, your best mod to date so far!
nick, if you buy the vafc II or neo soon, let us know ... i'm sure there are a few of us that would like to dyno again (been more than a year since the last dyno meet). we did the dyno at mustang muscle (not far from your crib) http://www.mustangmuscleonline.com/Dyno.aspx located off gravois road.
