Default What Oil?

Hey all!

I was just curious as to what oil you all use in your cars for the diff, tranny, and engine.

I changed my engine, and diff oil today and will be doing the trans tomorrow.

The previous owner had been using mobil1 ep with the oem pcx filter, I have read that some people have experienced excessive oil consumption with mobile1 in some instances.

So for the engine I chose Amsoil synthetic in 10w-30 and the pcx filter.
For the diff I chose L.E. 1605.

Tomorrow I am picking up some GM syncomesh Friction Modified from my local Chevrolet dealer for the transmission.

Have any of you had any failures or bad experiences with certian oils in the past?

Also, I plan on regreaseing the shifter lever pivot points in my S soon... it seems pretty strait forward but was wondering if any of you guys have done this, or need it done. Maybe we can get something down on the calender for july?! Grease some levers and go for a cruise?

From what I've read, the oil consumption issue with Mobil1 synthetic is mainly with AP1s.

Thanks for the link 8BALL

I just wanted to know all of your personal experiences for choosing or not choosing a certian oil.

I have been reading and reserching about oils for a couple of weeks now, another reason I chose to get away from the mobil1 is because of members reporting issues with there tct when using it. I have been experiencing a slight tct noise on cold starts occasionally.

After switching to the amsoil, so far, the tct noise has gone away... the engine sounds smoother at idle and throughout the rpm range. Keep in mind I have only put about 40 miles on my car since the oil change.

In the past I have also experienced excessive valvetrain noise when using mobil1 in my b20vtec swapped CRX, changed the oil to royal purple, and then to Q horse power synthetic.... royal purple was a bit pricey in my area and I find the Q horse power to be just as good, both ran noticbly smoother than the Mobil1.

This is quite a long read but discusses the tct issue

Im just trying to get a little discussion going, and possibly a cruise!

Also at what intervals do you swap your fluids?

A lot has to do with your diving style. Your style will determine your oil consumption and should direct you to the type of fluids you should use. Our group swaps fluids more frequently than the owners manual calls for, but again, it depends on whether you use synthetic or not and on your driving style.

I switch oil about every 4-5K using Royal Purple. I've gone as long as 10K on Royal Purple, sent it in for analysis and was told that the oil was still good for several K more. No shavings of any kind found.

Tranny about every 10K and since we have the car up, we do the diff at that time as well.
