I participate on bimmer.org (where most people DON'T have the same car) and almost never have to see fighting and members intentionally frustrating others.

I'm sure Loki can vouch for this.
Brad's post? This post appears different than your other one...

Got pointed to this thread by Sir Tom, guess it's for my bimmer.org presence as well.

I don't know what's happened in this forum but I will say this, I prefer this board to bimmer.org anyday... if not just for it's content and quality of people. One that that hurts bimmer.org is lack of moderation (and of course format) but on the other side of the coin too MUCH moderation can hurt a forum, hence censorship and the recent threads around this subject.

Too be expected tho... as boards become popular they have more advertisers and more publicity, they start to turn profits and also become liable for things presented in their forums. They are merely covering themselves against a lawsuit... I can only think of posting a disclaimer for places such as "off topic" that would make them not liable for whatever said in their, I'm all for that (making a little box to check off for acceptance would be good), I think freedom of speech between people with similar tastes is a good thing... even if you agree to disagree.

Anyways, bottomline is every board has it's problems and if people don't like to endure other people's opinions, I suggest finding another hangout.

cheers all,
-loki

Since I have had no beer tonight, I cannot garantee that my post on this subject will be as entertaining as it could be, but here goes.

1. They like to believe that they have increased their own stature at your expense.
This can only happen if you let it happen. People cannot take away anything from you. Often what happens is you let someone control your emotions. You GIVE them this power. Heck, what was that saying that we all learned as kids? Something about sticks and stones.....

If you goof, and someone points it out. Say thanks. You now know everything you knew before, plus a little of what they know. If this trend continues, you will eventually know everyting he knows, plus what you know, and he is stuck with just what he knows. Who is the better man now! (Maybe I should have that beer now!)

If you don't give a $h!t what some jerk says, you have denied granting him any influence over you. Eventually, they will leave the board to try to find someone they can influence. And thus, Keith, the useless Moderator is out of a useless job!

I also agree that we need to all lend a helping hand when we see someone with a post that is out of hand.

Bottom line is this. This board will take the personallity of its contributors. If you don't like something, and you want to stay on this board, then you will have to speak up, make it right, or the only ones left, that will be posting topics will be the jerks!

See ya!

Looks like the moderators should learn something from this...

This thread has come to my attention after I have tried to constructively tell a fellow owner that one of his comments were way out of line and ask him to try and be a little nicer in the future, only to have my head be bitten off.

I considered instead resorting to PM's to provide this constructive criticism, but I felt that it wouldn't be any more effective, if not ineffective.

I've decided that I will continue to speak out when I feel someone is out of line, but ultimately I would hope that the moderators do the same and/or take action. There are some board members that are getting away with far too much.

I think I agree with tms02 that speaking out in the first place is exactly what's causing some to continue to press on with insulting/degrading/wholly-unnecessary remarks. But, if that means shutting up and letting such a person drive one or two otherwise wonderful people off the board, there's no way I can't speak up.

So in conclusion, since I can't not speak up in situations like this, I feel we need just a little bit more moderation in some areas (some -- I recognize that some areas of s2ki are indeed very well-moderated), but of course not too much. I can understand if moderators fear that the censored member might give a hissy fit "why did my post get deleted?!", but the fact of the matter is, the rest of us all know why it got deleted, right?

What does this mean? This means, as an active participant of this community, I'm going to be actively looking for more particpation from moderators to do their jobs. I believe there's a Moderator's handbook with guidelines, isn't there? Does anyone know if this guideline needs to be updated, or if it's simply the following of the guidelines that has become lax? Perhaps the ratio of members-to-moderators has become too large to manage?

So yeah.... Merry Christmas
