My theory is this. A basic website takes about 2 weeks to build and should cost about $2500. The basic thing about site building is that there are many many bits of code in existence that you can reuse. So a basic site built from ready-made parts, adding the graphics and putting it all together in basic form is about 2 weeks work.

Now the more components you add the longer it will take and how long depends on the size and complexity of the bits. If you want something really custom then the time and price goes up dramatically.

S2KI is made up mainly of ready-made components integrated and customized. The photo album for owners stuff took about 2 weeks to get done as there were a lot of bits to customize and write from scratch. That is a feature custom to the site. There are ready-made photo album packages that could be done in much less time perhaps as little as a day. We wrote a sponsorship/banner package from scratch because there was nothing out there that met our requirements. It took about 4 weeks to do because it was very complex. A simple banner rotation package could be done in a couple of hours.

I would say a good rule of thumb is 2 weeks and $2500 to start and then up from there.

Hope that helps
