So what is in place now instead of an alternator? I ask because if the MINI (for example) has an alternator, I'd be danged if I could ID it. Also, it doesn't seem to be a thing anymore re: "you've got a bad alternator"

The last time I "popped the hood" and peered in and readily ID'ed an alternator was in our last full size truck we had around 2010 or so.
