i thought the budget was going to be in the 300 to 400 range but it looks like it might go higher,
i was at my local REI the other night and saw their Novara series, they call it an Urban bike, not really MT and not really road. but it nearly doubles the budget,

I'm leaning more towards a road bike but really don't want to find out what happens if i hit a pothole or something else in the path. would still like some of the forgiveness that the MT bike will give.

REI is $$
I bought a hybrid road bike last year see below. It's really a road bike with MTB handlebars.
I have ridden it a lot more than my mountain bikes, great bike for$ 350.00
Some assembly required, but it was simple

I think for what you want to spend, you are going to be happier more to the mountain bike side than the roadie side. For whatever reason, roadies are more expensive.
Yea... But go to a place where you can ride a few. Buying bikes online is okay if you know what you want.
There is not much worse than trying to ride a bike that isn't the right size for you. Your wrists, ass, and knees will take a beating.

Meh... Not bad if you are just putting around, I guess. I do agree with George that REI is expensive. I would also have you check out http://www.jensonusa.com/. They have some good deals there.

They've gotten smarter over the years with people pre-loading their shopping carts before the sale.. and then waiting

Bikes usually are pretty decent after reduced prices and 50% off.. if it's what you're looking for.
So..
Definitely riding next Thursday (5/27).
Bobbie is officially done with Rugby for the season so there is no point in me scheduling my work around that.
Now I just gotta make sure the bike is up to snuff. I don't think I have touched it but to move it out of the way since last season.
See you all on the trail next week!

Fairly technical in the woods, rocks roots etc. Then some open spaces and some real single track. stream crossing.
One part of the true single track was in a field in waist height grass (Pete would be wigged out I am sure, potential for ticks). You could barely see the path as it was only a foot wide or less.
A section of gravel (closed road) small paved road. A place called the rock garden. I ended up at on 121 and the Black hills Lake. The trail goes into the trail system for that park also. I turned around at that point. It was about 2 hours for me.
I am very rusty and was riding very conservatively, not tacking the tricky areas much.
