Banister is accurate... Or railing... There are three parts; the rial, the newel posts, and the balusters. The newel posts go in first with the rail being supported between them. The balusters are the decorative bits that keep the little kids from falling though.

None of it will go in until almost the end, though. Usually installed by the trim guys or the stair company will come back.

A ton of materials are probably still being carried up and down those stairs. Each trip could damage the rail so it is usually left off until the big work is done.

HOWEVER... Per our friends at OSHA, there should be a temp rail on those stairs.
