Original Gangsters Thread!
Management is always stuck at the dealership late on weekends and on the last day of the month......plus it is an opportunity to get another deal in. Salesmen feed off the managers' enthusiasm, but new salespeople are not seasoned enough to not trust anyone (I hate to say it like that, but you've got to scrutinize every deal). They bring in a deal to the manager who wants to go home, but at the same time wants another deal, so he's rushing through things. The scam artist talks and looks like a perfectly legit customer, so they write you a bogus downpayment check for the car (which you cannot verify that late at night) and demand that they get to take the car overnight, and promise to bring it back when the store opens back up. At this point the salesman and the manager are over the high of getting another car deal (because this is a done deal) and are simply eager to get home because it is around 10:00 PM or later. They've also had coffee or water and some laughs with this very normal-seeming customer, so they agree.
Off goes the customer who came in with a totally fake ID, fake check, fake story, and some great acting skills in your new car. They have all night and probably another day or two to make that car disappear before the dealership realizes it is time to call the cops. By that time it has been through the chop shop or the boat has sailed.
I know my example is not the same as what Mark posted, but you asked how we can get scammed holding all the cards and this was the first thing that came to mind.......I know because it happened to me my first year selling cars. Fortunately we got the car back in my case.

Have you been on corvetteforums.com ? My friend said there is background info on that car on there.
Surviving at this point, busier than hell with work and my office move. I'm kind of wishing the company had sold.
DBR-No, I am probably out of town that weekend and week. Off to the great white north.
How was you trip to Houston? learn anything worthwhile or just a waste of time. No need to answer that last one with your boss listening in.
