Default So im going to make martinis...

So I want to make martinis this weekend..really enjoy gin and tonic and want to expand on gin based drinks...

been looking at using tanqueray gin and noilly prat vermouth. Also have read several "original" martini recipies calling for orange bitters (pre-prohibition) and plan on trying that as well as garnishing with potentially olives, lemon twist, or onion.

anyones thoughts on this and the ingredients chosen? Not set in stone on them though i repeated keep seeing the prat vermouth used...the gin seems more flexible.

I'm partial to Bombay Saphire when drinking gin, though it's not often that I do.

Dirty Martini is the best! And I try to go Vodka, not gin.

Well... Martinis were traditionally made with Gin and not Vodka. However, you can't go wrong either way.
A good Gin is Bombay Saphire, Mercury, Old Raj (110 proof baby), and Hendricks. Don't drink Beefeater or Tangueray. Both will give you bad headaches the next morning even if you drink moderately.

I know you said martini, but have you ever had a Tom Collins? Gin, sour mix, splash of soda(not cola), and I put cherry juice. Top with a cherry.
Sub vodka for a vodka collins. I personally don't like them, but people seem to enjoy...

For Gin, I would suggest Tangueray Ten (octagonal bottle) or Bombay Saphire.

Vodka is Belvedere . . . I don't think anything comes close.

I like 'Martini' brand vermouth. (http://www.bacardimartini.co.uk/bran..._vermouth.html)

I'll expand on WestSideBilly's recipe

Saphire is where its at! I use no other gin. Much prefer it over Tangueray...much smoother.

Bombay is definately the best Gin to use for a Martini, has the most flavour.
If you decide to do Vodka Martini's, I would suggest Grey Goose Vodka. If you're willing to fork-out the cash, there's no beating it.
