Make me a Pina Colada while you're at it. It's a bitch drink, but who cares, it tastes good.

Many Martini fanatics would cringe at this method.

Hard Alcohol should NEVER be placed in a freezer.
When it comes to Vodka and Gin, it's not as much of a sin as if you were to put Rye or Bourbon in there. The freezer give the alcohol a slightly syrupy consistency, and really takes away from the full flavour of your booze.

Martini's can either be shaken or stirred.
Granted, there are many people with Martini Shaker's on their bar, and these work well - the metal canister filled with ice, rapidly chills the drink. But there is no need to vigorously shake for 30 seconds... a few shakes is all it takes.
A true Martini fanatic will never ask for a Shaken Martini though, as the shaking process tends to 'bruise' the gin. A few short stirs with the ice cubes in the metal canister is all it takes to mix the Gin and the Vermouth, and chill it.

For a sure-fire, easy-to-make, tried-tested-and-true Martini:
2 oz 'Bombay Sapphire' Gin
1/4 oz 'Martini & Rossi' Vermouth
pour over ice
stir 3 or 4 times
strain into Martini Glass
Garnish with 2 Green Olives on nice toothpick
Enjoy with friends

Vodka and Gin

100% Blue Agave Anejo Tequlia is the only way to go.

No! You did not just say that!

Rob, we're gonna have to disagree here. If there is no gin, there is no martini. Granted, I prefer mine with no vermouth, and just drink the gin neat (would you call that super dry?) perhaps with an olive or 2.

I'm a big fan of Tanqueray Ten for my gin-based martinis...

But I would suggest stocking more than one type of premium gin/vodka for your guests. In the mean time, just start making some and taste which "classic" recipe variant you enjoy the most. Wouldn't hurt to have a couple alternatives too.

good input from ya all.

yea am aiming for traditional martini consumtion at this point (one drink at a time heh )

though the speak of vodka and no vermouth and shaking was a bit blasphemous

sounds like bombay slightly edged out tanqueray so it wins.

Well... Martinis were traditionally made with Gin and not Vodka. However, you can't go wrong either way.
A good Gin is Bombay Saphire, Mercury, Old Raj (110 proof baby), and Hendricks. Don't drink Beefeater or Tangueray. Both will give you bad headaches the next morning even if you drink moderately.
Hendricks, without a doubt! Tanqueray Ten or Bombay Sapphire, if you can't find Hendricks.

Peronsally, I just chill my martini glasses overnight in the freezer, then I just coat the glass with vermouth and chill the vodka and pour. You don't need a lot of vermouth, especially if you get a gin/vodka that you really like. I LOVE Kettle One Martinis! In my opinion Kettle One is the best vodka for Martinis.
