Default Oil Filters Tech + Reviews, Oversized Filters

Howdy all,

Sorry for starting another thread on this, but the old one was taking too long to load!!! I've updated my filter review page with a few pics of used Honda filters as well as new info regarding JDM filters- there are at least two manufacturers of them, and different designs. I've also opened up a Mobil 1 M1-105 and M1-208, both of which are at least 20% larger than stock AND will work in their place! The M1-208 doesn't have a bypass valve, if for some reason you have been looking for that.

Check it out:

I've got my extinguisher in hand, bring on the flames!

Todd,

thanks for your excellent writeup on oil filters! So do the two oversized Mobil 1 filters fit an all-stock S2000? Are you just concerned about them clearing the various X-Braces? Did you check the fit of either filter with any of the X-Braces?

Also, do these filters come with the necessary crush washer?

Thanks,

Ted

Ted-

I haven't tried them on the S2 yet, but from my measurements they should fit/clear a stock S2. I haven't seen any braces yet, so I can't say if they would or would not fit. I would think so, since you can get to the filter from up top. I'll be changing the oil in the S2 this weekend, I'll check and post back.

The filters don't come with crush washers- my understanding is that Honda ones don't, either. If yours come with them it's a courtesty of the dealer (hparts.com charges extra for them). These washers are available seperately from Honda or any parts store- they are a pretty common item on most imports.

No need to flame....very good research. It's obvious from the questions asked we need some insight. The crush washer is not used on the filter it goes on the drain plug. As the filter probably fits many cars, you don't get a washer. The washers are 15 cents at your local dealer and the one for the engine fits one of the other four fluid ports (i.e. transimission drain and fill/ differential drain and fill). I think its the tranny fill plug too. The filter has an O-Ring seal. If you do your own service MAKE SURE THE RING ON THE OLD FILTER COMES OFF!. This is a common cause of catastrophy......just ask my fellow Utahn Ira. The Honda Servicer Manual specifies "Use only filters with a built in bypass system" (Ref: 2001 Helm Manual Page 8-6 (Paragraph 2). Why you ask? A filter bypass allows oil to go around your filter should it become clogged. Without a bypass the filter can break at the swage joint and your engine will get fried. Non bypass filters are cheaper but the risk is not worth the reward.

Just a note to anyone who cares, I'm currently running the Mobil 1 M1-105 filter. It's larger than the stock filter with more filter media and more area inside the can. It just barely clears the water hose on the oil cooler, but DOES clear and I was able to install it from above.

Seals up fine and works good... no complaints, an easy way to help out the oiling system.
