As promised here are some before and after shots of some PC work on my dad's car trunk lid.
It had some pretty bad scratches on the trunk lid. It took me and my PC about 2.5 to almost 3 hours. I started conservatively with 3M SMR, (noticed it was not making a significant difference) so then used 3M Fine Cut (compound) , then went back to 3M SMR to finish off to get my desired results.
I'm not ecstatic, but IMO I think it's a decent phase 1 of 2. I think if I had a better cutting pad, my results would have been better. I topped it off with some z2.
I plan on really working at it in another 3-4 mths, but for now I think the results are satisfactory to get me by until then. There are but a few imperfections that do require more time.
hey simon...
wow, looks to me like you did a great job!
what did your dad think?
what setting did you use on the pc?
did you work small squares?
i like your approach- and like the idea to live with it a few more months and then try it again...
remember, small squares and as you get more comfortable with the machine a bit higher speed setting. maybe work the area a bit longer next time
but, again- looks to me like you did a great job, and bet your dad was impressed!!
-dad couldn't believe I managed to rid the scratches..
-I started off using the smr with speed 1-2 (non effective)
Higher speeds from 4 -5 were much more effective in longer durations with both the Fine Cut and SMR. So I stuck with higher speeds.
-Oh for sure small squares as recommended by the folks at properautocare.com
Decent results. Looks like you need to work at a higher speed since you said you have a variable speed. Stay away from dark colored pads, go with yellow on that dark color to avoid swirls.
