Toasted engine
I would appreciate any feedback on this issue. My wife and I run the registration for the Chin Motorsports events and were at the AMS event this weekend. Prior to the event her 2001 S2K was teched at a local high performance shop. The car had 5K miles on it so they opted to leave the break in oil in (think it is good til 6 or 7K miles). The car was on the track for the parade laps and I did probably 3 laps at 60% of the cars potential. The engine shutdown and started making a tapping noise. The car was later towed to Gwinnet Honda. They are stating that the car has no oil in it and they are not going to warranty the engine. The car had oil (full and clear) when we left Orlando, 600 miles later the car has none and no evidence of leaks or spills. Looking for guidance?????

Sounds to me like a dealer who doesn't want to do the work! Lying bastards!
I would take this all the way to the president of Honda! Talk to your DSM (district service manager) and explain to them that the situtation. And that you can provide witnesses from when you tech'd the car before the parade laps. I think witnesses will be important in what could be a fight.
Man, what a bummer...
Good luck and keep us posted!

Agreed- search for the #4 cylinder failure, and be sure that it isn't the problem.
If you really had the engine full when you left, there's absolutely no reason for this to occur- fight and keep fighting. There's enough evidence of oil system problems (failures) that you have more than enough ammo to get the engine replaced.
Think of it this way- with the few miles you had on the car, and the fact that Honda recomends a 7k oil change, what the in the HELL do they think happened to that oil? You drained it? If the engine burned it all, guess what- it's still their problem.

If I remember correctly, yes, they all happen below 10k, and the failure only happens on certain production dates. Mine was one of them. The debate is if the block had a casting problem that caused insufficient oiling of the #4 cyl. Also, another theory is that the piston skirt is hitting the side of the cyl wall causing scoring, and oil blow by. In either case, there are enough instances, with simmilar symptoms to warrant Honda investigation, yet they keep making excuses as to why it faild. Some engines have been replaced, and in other cases (mine) Honda blames the problem on driver error (they said I misshifted-never happened).
Hope you get yours fixed free, and get your car running soon. If you do have to re build out of your own pocket, and want to mod it, let me know, Ill tell you what I am doing.

Hey, Mark,
Inquiring minds want to know... If you can post your mod plans or PM me when you get a chance. I may have missed previous threads that detail your toils, but I am very interested in your plans and current progress.
Thanks in advance...

did you add oil.. i mean not changing it but leaving in the orginal break in oil.. and adding oil. during break in it burns through alot.. if the oil level drops too much.. it could easily do damage w/ high revs.
my car was still burning through oil long after break in.. i would notice by lack of vtec punch.

Wonder how many failures it will take before Honda admits that this is their problem.
