I replaced the stock speakers the first month I got the car. Lately, I've been thinking about putting in an amp and doing the Lucid rear speaker thing. Since I have a bit of a tin ear anyway, I just want to improve the volume a bit and still have clear sound. I actually didn't mind the stock speakers although the Sony 1621's are an improvement. Could I use the stock speakers in the rear panels? Any reason why I couldn't or shouldn't? I am keeping the stock head unit.

Sure you can. Use a dremel tool or a Swiss Army Knife to cut them down to 4 inch diameter. Or 100 mm diameter. Either should work.
If you want, you can use the pieces you cut off to make a tweeter for the front. You'll be able to make a 2.5 inch tweeter but you need to add a magnet. (4 inch plus 2.5 inch = 6.5 inches...right?)

OK, so hit me with a baseball bat 'cause I just won't listen. I was tinkering in the garage and decided to analyse this situation and do some measurements and test fittings. Here's some pics:
1. Cut out the hole.
2. Mounted the OEM speaker with the Sony 1621 cover plate that I didn't use from the door speaker swap.
3. The finished product.
I'm waiting till after the long weekend when the dealers open and get the Accord radio harness (thanks Rstark) so I can pirate the pins. I'll let you know what they sound like. Yeah, yeah, so they won't mute but I hardly ever use the mute and the volume control is quite handy anyway. So as far as fit, the stock 6.5" DO fit!
I originally tried doing this with 6.5" speakers before deciding on the smaller cone speakers. The stock speaker has a magnet diameter of 2.72" so fitting that into the area isn't much of an issue. Remember, its the stock speaker, with paper cone and wimpy magnet. Many 4" speakers have diameters that are larger than that. Most 6.5" after-market speakers intrinsically have even larger ones which won't fit (without cutting metal).
The other issue would be structural integrity when you cut off the panel. Since the plastic is the only thing holding it in place, taking more surface area out and the surrounding frame can subject you to issues with vibrations (from the speaker and the car). Each panel I build, I literally shake to see if its secure and tight.
The metal in that area (not the brace) feels the equivalent of 11 gauge steel (2 sheets stamped together). If you cut some of that out you can get the bigger magnets in there and mount the speaker higher on the panel. Then I would reinforce the plastic panel (PP plastic).
