Old stock speakers for the Lucid mod?
OK, just finished the wiring, got the pieces back together and went out for a blast at highway speeds.
KAWABUNGA!
I am very pleased that didn't let the old OEM speakers go to waste. Lucid should be commended once again for the vision and the guts to do something that everybody told him wouldn't work.
My impressions:
This is a MUST do. I now sit IN the music. It surrounds me totally. Wind noise, road noise are no longer an issue. I get loud, clear sound at highway speeds and beyond. In fact, I can barely hear my Neuspeed exhaust. This effectively doubles the wattage output of your stock head unit since the original 2 speaker set-up is not bridged thereby wasting the other source of "juice". I no longer lust for an amp (it's plenty loud now - I don't need to broadcast my taste in music to those 10 blocks away). This does it for me.
An interesting note:
I have Sony 1621's in the doors and now that I can compare these with the OEM's I can say that the Sony's have more bass and the OEM's have more treble. This is good for me because it makes the music more discernable at high volume. I have no need of shaking windows with that annoying "thumpa thumpa thump" type of music (if that's what you can call it). If you need the base then don't put the OEM's in the back. Get another set of Sony's if you don't want to spend a lot of money.
A side note:
The harness I got was not the right one. The back of the radio actually has "male" pins so the harness you get must have the corresponding "female" receiver. Not wanting to delay, I just soldered the wires onto the pins on the back of the radio, drilled out the stock harness so the wires would just feed through it and plug back into the radio. THIS WAS A MAJOR PAIN IN THE FRIGGEN REAR. If you are not a handy kinda guy, I strongly suggest you contact Lucid and pay him whatever money he wants for his adapter harnesses. (I may still do this just to make the install a bit more neat and secure.) Never-the-less, I do NOT regret having done this. After all, the OEM's were just sitting there AND I no longer need an amp. For me, the OEM stereo is VERY good and contains that untapped resource (the second powered set of outputs). The added bonus is that the OEM speakers, at least for me, was not that bad. Used in this way, they are perfect. Admittedly, the Sony's can take a lot more volume with clarity than the OEM's but when all 4 are hooked up, there is no need to crank the volume up to the point where the OEM's start to "crackle". (I haven't made them "crackle" yet.)

WOW! An old thread resurrected from the dead.
This would be a great time to give an update. For almost 3 years now, this setup has served me well and I've had absolutely no complaints. I never did do an amp as I never felt one was needed. HOWEVER, my Sony 1621s have just started to fail. The left one occasionally quit working. If I smack it with you hand, it'll come back to life. I'm about to try and find a set of the JVC 4-ways locally. If I can't, I'll order a set from Lucid.
It might amaze you to know that the OEM door speakers that I put into the rear panels are still working flawlessly and actually give me better sound than the Sonys do. For some, the OEM speakers are crap. For me, they have been just right. (Maybe I should just go out and get another set to put back into the doors? Naw, Honda will hose me on 'em.

He lives 200 miles north of me and if you guys can agree on price, I would be willing to act as intermediary for you two in this deal. He has inter-office mail that he can get stuff down to me free. I'll receive your money, send it to him, receive the speaker panels and send them to you. I know him personally, but since you don't, this ensures both parties are protected.
(You can pay my for the shipping next time I see you.
)ps. There is only one catch, you're best to get the harness from Lucid so the speakers can be plug and play, unless you have aftermarket head unit that already has leads for another set of speakers. Soldering leads to the stock head unit is a pain and doesn't always work well. You need to check to see how much the Lucid harness is now.
I'll check it out - I already have a Pioneer Premier head, subs and an amp besides the fancy kevlar door speakers
My son works at Car Toys - a stereo shop and gets me discounts on all the gear and installation
So I gotta run it past him.
He'll prolly need to sell me speakers that match the sound ? We'll see!
I thought that this was a cool idea!
