Thanks for pointing this thread out to me, Steve, and thanks Bryan for posting it
Amuse, Yes, I will accept orders from the UK as long as you're willing to pay the larger shipping fees. I just checked with FedEx before finishing this post to see what the rate would be...not good news. I can do it for sure, but the cost for shipping will be around $100. I haven't tried UPS, but at the moment I have an easy account with FedEx, so I'd be willing to bet he price would drop with someone else. My advice in that case would be find a group of people in your area who are interested in having the mod done and ship them all to me at once.
Andrew, the size of the screen doesn't matter as long as it is etched (without an etching nothing glows but the edges). A strong possibility that has come up in the last several days is the use of a frosted-type sticker in place of the etching. Most sign shops will be able to make you whatever design you want using this material that looks like frosted glass. The brightness level will be a bit less than if the screen itself was etched, but evidently it's still reasonable enough to warrant going through with it.
I will give this warning, however. I haven't yet cut into the plastic material the stock screen is made of, so I don't know how it will handle the router. I'm sure there won't be a problem, but we'll know soon enough once Steve's is done
Okay...my turn!!! Although I really dig blue I know yellow will be less "attractive" to the Po-Po . Playing with yellow for now
Okay...well ...I "jumped in" when my package arrived from Mac (so I missed out on any additionally edited directions he offered). Everything is neatly mounted now, but I plan to revisit the mod as I still want to find the right wire to tap into the [white/black] brake wire. I *can* say that using the earlier posted pic below ...
...I found that my "always hot" was the center "D". And that I ended up using "E" to supply power to the LEDs only when the lights are turned on.
Also, should it matter, I used "a comparable gauged" speaker wire to extend from that slot "E"...and ran it forward along and behind the plastic "left wall area" of the driver's footwell. I continued around, down, and towards the rear, tucking this wire under the entire length of the doorsill pushing it between the carpet and the tiny gap of the plastic doorsill. Then ran it up the backside, mounted the MacGyver control box via hook-n-latch velcro directly under the "OEM Hook" along the back plastic (for me Lucid Speaker) panel (the one closest to the driver's door). I loosened the "OEM Hook" and ran the "multi-colored wires" from MacGyver's control box through the upper hole of the 2 holes that the "OEM Hook" utilizes when mounted (top-most is just a "set" hole and there is enough room to slip MacGyver's wires through here and effectively let the wires share the hole with the "OEM Hook" mount/tab). The lower hole is, of course, for the mounting screw.
With MacGyver's control box mounted where I indicated, the rest of the wires ("phone" wire and all) tucked neatly behind my plastic [Lucid Speaker] panel. I ran the ground to a screw back behind the lucid panel area. That screw went right into the metal frame...seemed as good a ground as any (so feel free to correct me if wrong). Basically just stuck the ground wire into the screw hole and then followed by screwing the screw back into the hole. That made the ground in 100% contact with the frame. Lastly, I did a little dismantling of the plastic (one screw & popped one "tab") to allow me to tuck/run the phone wire up along a crease/crack in the panels. Only had to make the wire visible for about a 1" area as it twisted out and then tucked back in again to the secret compartment. Did the whole "hole drilled" thang (really guess I started there, huh ...and then poked the phone wire through, mounted the diffuser back into place, then tucked/ran the phone line down behind the Lucid panel area, yada, yada )
As I mentioned before, I still have to come back to this mod as I was unsure of how & where to tap into the black/white brake wire . Also did not wire up the flip-down feature. I practically *never* drop the fold the windscreen since I have my camera mount permanently installed directly behind the windscreen mechanism.
Mac this is a tremendous mod!!! Very cool!!!
Well, here are some pics (bad enough that I have a crappy digi-cam...add to that fact that I'm taking pics in the dark ). Let not these pics reflect poorly on Mac's design. I'm certain folks can appreciate the difficulting of digi-cam issues in low lighting...
One other thing I will say...these LEDs make *every fingerprint, smear, you name it* visible if you are a nit-picker. So do yourself a favor and clean up your windscreen before you fire this puppy up or you'll be goin'
