Caliper Removal/Brake Installation
I have an '03 and was wondering are the calipers the same on all the models? I saw the one web site that has the instruction manuals online. Anyone have any pics of how to remove the calipers? Which bolts need to be unscrewed? Do you need to drain brake lines? Or just let the caliper hang by the tubing? Also once the calipers are off how do brake pads come off? Anything special a rookie needs to know? Please a DETAILED explanation is greatly appreciated. I'm no mechanic but I'm getting ready to swap my rotors for some slotted ones. Do I need to remove calipers to install new rotors? I imagine so. I can't really see how I would be able to get rotors in between the caliper and mounted on the axle.
There are several good writeups on the subject, but I can't find them on the search feature. It's pretty easy and if you've ever done a disc brake job, this car is one of the easier ones.
Yes, all of the S2000 brakes are the same. The bolts you need to unscrew are the two holding the entire caliper on. Somebody wrote about how you don't have to remove both of the bolts on the front caliper - just the bottom bolt, and loosen the top bolt, swing it up and remove the pads. You need to compress the piston, and make sure the reservoir doesn't overflow. Also, be careful not to get any dust, dirt or debris in the fluid reservoir.
Never dangle the caliper from the brake line. Use a bungee cord, coat hanger, or rest it on an upside-down bucket. The brake pads just snap in place. You have to wiggle them in place because of the stainless clips that keep them from moving around.
If you plan on removing the rotors, then you need to use an impact driver to remove the two screws that hold it on to the hub. Once the screws are removed, the rotor just comes right off. In fact, you don't even have to reinstall those screws if you don't want to. If you do, be sure to use anti-sieze compound to prevent them from freezing up the next time you try to remove them.
Good luck!!
