Default Shiftin Without Clutch?

Does anybody in here kno how to shift without depressin the clutch? becuz i let my brother in law drive my car and he can do it at like 4500rpm to 5000rpm without grindin.........

I've done this many times - it's a a matter of matching your engine speed (rpm) to your transmission speed (gears and mph). It is very easy to do while up-shifting in the first four gears. Without touching the clutch pedal, you pull the shifter out of 3rd, for example, and push it very slightly from neutral towards 4th. When the engine rpm comes down to the right rpm for 4th gear and your car's speed, the shifter will get sucked into fourth (this part is all feel - you'll know what I mean when you get it right). You may have to feather the gas to slow the rpm decline, if you need more time.

Really you can do this shifting up or down, as long as you can match engine and transmission speed. It's just easiest to do it shifting up (since the next gear will be naturally matched at a lower rpm, and the rpm's go down as soon as you take your foot off the gas to shift).

This is something I learned how to do when my crappy '88 Hyundai Excel's clutch pedal spring broke and I needed to drive the thing to the dealer. Other than that it serves no real purpose (except grinding gears when you f it up).

i know it can be done on older cars with the right revs...

not sure about the S2000... never been that good to try.

The S2000 is the only car I have ever driven where you can shift through all six gears at any RPM without using the clutch. I've done it a couple times just messing around, and I can shift just about as quick as when I use the clutch. I was amazed when I found out I could do this. I could only shift into 4th without the clutch in my Mustang, and it was quite hard to do also.

You do realize that the synchros end up being the clutch in this case? The synchros are designed to smooth the acceleration of the shaft piece between the gear and the clutch. Normally this involves only the shaft piece (around 18lbs). However, when you do a clutchless shift, the syncros have to accelerate/decelerate the engine as well as the shaft piece. There's a reason the clutch is so much bigger than a synchro.

This isn't much of a problem if you match the revs. But personally I'd rather wear down my clutch when shifting than my synchros, as the clutch is designed for that job.
