Default Nice results with Polk Audio speakers

I installed a pair of Polk Audio EX602a's in my S2000 yesterday and the difference in sound is well worth the price and effort. The Polks are the only modification to the car or sound system. They fit the baskets perfectly with no cutting. I picked up a speaker wire harness adapter (part # DW-7800SH) at Circuit City that allowed me to unplug the factory speaker and just plug in the Polks. No wire cutting. I had to drill one hole in the plastic basket to line up the 3rd screw at the bottom of the speaker. I'm hoping that hole will be the imperfection that will allow the evil spirits to escape my S2000. The whole job took less than an hour and the difference in sound is significant. The Polks play much louder and cleaner without distorting. It's at least a 200% improvement in sound over the factory speakers (using no qualified method except my interpretation). I choose the Polk Audio speakers for their relatively high efficiency (92db) in the hopes of balancing the system given the low power output of the factory headunit. It seems a suitable match. I hope this helps anybody who isn't ready to go "all the way" with the complete stereo system upgrade but just cant take the poopy sound of the factory speakers any longer.

I intalled Polks in my car, but I have the DX3065 components. I absolutely love the sound I get from my setup!!!

However, my install was not as easy. I made a new spacer from 5/8" particle board to get the speakers to fit in the doors. The 1" dome tweeter I placed on the bottom of the A-pilar. I have the tweeters and woofers on different channels, tweeters of the front and woofers on the rear. This way I can fade the tweeters and the woofers. I did this because the midrage sound diminsh more than the tweeters above 45mph with the top down. So now I just fade between the two to get a balanced sound. When top is up, I don't need to fade because the bass has enclosed area to resonate against. With the top down, the bass just escapes.

Shayne,

Nicely done! I too am looking to do a similar mod, i.e., higher quality speakers and maybe tweeters, without changing the head unit. Along this line, I have on back-order the Sony SX-V1631 (don't know how long it will take Crutchfield to deliver). Can you tell me a bit more about the Polk's -- frequency response, cone depth, and $$$ and where purchased?

Thanks,

George

Well, I'm not Shayne, but I'll try to help anyway as I too own a pair of EX602a speakers. Mine are in my Cherokee, not my S2000, so I can't tell you about installing them. The specs in the manual read as follows:

Type: 6.5" coaxial
Driver: 6.5" driver w/12mm tweeter
Mounting Diameter: 5 3/8" (135mm)
Mounting Depth (top): 2 1/8"
Mounting Depth (bottom): 2 5/16
Power Handling (max): 120w
Nominal Imp.: 4 ohms
Freq. Response: 75-22kHz
Grille height & diameter 9/16" & 6 1/2"
Sensitivity (SPL): 92dB
Unit Weight: 1lb 9.6oz

Mine were about $90 at Circuit City. You could probably get them for less somewhere on the Internet though.

What other speakers did you guys try before deciding on the Polks? I went to the store today to listen to various speakers. I had thought I had decided on the Sony 1631's but, after hearing then I don't know any more.
While I was there, I had a listen to both 4" Infinity 425i and the Polk for the rears. I know I'm talking about something different, but I was wondering if buying a matching set (4" 402a in rear and 6.5" 602a in front) would make any difference over a mismatched set? I know in home stereo equipment, it's very advisable to buy a matching set.

Tonight I've checked out various reviews and sources for both the 402 and 602's. So far, I very impressed. Now, I need to find a local store that has both sets to listen to. Just curious as to why you went with the Polk's

A few weeks ago I went to Circuit City and noticed that they were running a Polk sale where they offered something like half off on the second pair. You might want to see if the deal is still on and if you would get the 4" at 1/2 off if you paid their full price for the 6". My recollection was that the 6" were reasonable in price.

If the deal is still on, please post it here so others will know.

Thanks
