Default What the hell? Where did my lug nuts go? (Broken stud thread)

So last Sunday I was washing my car. It was a nice sunny day (something rare in the Pacific Northwest) and I figured I would wash my car and go for a drive. I was almost done, just had to wipe off the wheels when I noticed two lug nuts were missing from the front drivers side wheel! Well, so much for going for a drive. Took it to the Honda dealer on Thursday and had it fixed, cost $8 for two studs and two lug nuts and about $90 for labor. What kills me is I can't figure out what caused them to snap off. The mechanic had no idea either. The wheels have not been off the car since they were installed, I periodically check the torque (80 ft lbs.) There was no indication they were mounted incorrectly, hubcentric rings still in place, no vibration or unusual noice. Maybe it was thieves but it would be exceptionally difficult to steal the wheels off my car. It is parked outside, but parked on a hill with the wheels on the passenger side close to the curb and the steering wheel hard to the right. In the time between the car wash where I noticed the lugs were snapped off and the previous car wash, the car wasn't parked anywhere but my apartment complex. Anyways, hopefully it won't happen again. Here are some pics.

The only thing I can think of was they were over torqued, but you you checked on the torque. I don't know.

But on the other note, the car and the wheel look really good.

Look at all the rust on it. That thing didn't just happen the day before.

^Yeah, I know. In the process of fixing that.

The rust is on the hub behind the wheel, not the studs themselves.

Do you ever do donuts could be why? The stress and heat on the rotor might have snapped one of the lugnutt's off from being too tight. Who knows, same thing happened to me.

No, I don't do donuts, auto x, track it or the such. I drive it in a "spirited" manner occasionally, but far from anything I would consider abusive.
