What the hell? Where did my lug nuts go? (Broken stud thread)
Simply checking to make sure the lugs are tight won't reveal if they were over-torqued when they were installed! It will only tell you if the lugs have backed off of the factory recommended 80 ft-lbs. The wrench will tell you that the lugs have a torque applied to them that is a MINIMUM of 80 ft-lbs if that's what the wrench is set to.
If you want to know if they were too tight, see how much effort it takes to loosen them and conversely, how much it takes to tighten them to 80 ft-lbs. Or alternatively, keep increasing the setting of the wrench until you see the lug move. Whatever the setting the wrench is will match the applied torque on the lugs.
