Default Thumping sound from the rear

Hey guys,

I need your help again! I'm getting a constant thumping noise comming from the rear of the car. It sounds like a knock, as if someone is knocking on a hollow log at a constant tempo; faster the speed the faster the tempo is. It's constant at any speed, yet it stops when I apply the breaks. Apart from that, I get a high pitch noise or squeak, which sounds like its comming from the suspension, although I am not certain of this. My initial guess is that I blew out a shock or strut(not sure if we have struts). My friend had also confirmed the squeak as I drove by. Anyways, what do you guys think it is? Any help will be appreciated!

Could be your CVs. There is a whole thread about the shakes and stutters from worn CVs.

Although one Aus member doesn't consider this a problem most others do.

Hmm....I'll be getting it checked out soon, Btw I am not experiencing any vibrations. It does, however, thump a little but it is barely noticable.

Perhaps you forgot that you locked someone in your trunk?

CV? Trying making sharp turns and see if the thumping is worse.

A pitted CV cup would most likely shudder, but only under acceleration- no symptoms when coasting. Bulldog's description states it is speed-dependent until brakes are applied. The first, and easiest, thing to check is that your axle nuts are torques to 220 ft.lbs.

Have you removed your wheels for any reason just prior to this happening?

Skip,

Wheels have not been taken off. I will be bring my car to a shop tomorrow. I hope that it will not cost me much, if it is in fact a CV. It is present when I am coasting.

Carlo,

Under sharp turns, the thumping does not get any worse. It will, however, produce a squeaking noise that is louder than when I am driving normaly.

if it stops when the brakes are applied I would think it is something connected to the moving parts of the braking system. maybe a severly warped rotor or a sticking caliper. just a guess.
