Default Looking to buy new big screen TV

So I just bought my first house and am looking to get a nice TV for the living room. I've been looking at flat screens in the 40-50" range in the $1000-1500 range. Just looking for suggestions on what's best, where to get it, and what I should expect. Right now I'm looking at a Samsung 42" DLP and a Sony 46" LCD at BestBuy.com Give me some feedback on what others are using, and what is better. I also found a Hewlett Packard 46" Plasma in my price range. BTW, I'd be using this with basic cable for now. I play Xbox 360 and PS2 frequently as well as watching movies and NHL hockey. Thanks guys!

do you get HD cable in your area? that might be a deciding factor between spending a lot on a plasma now or settling for an lcd and waiting a few years for plasma

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I can get HD cable, but I'm probably not for atleast a year because I just bought the house, funds are tight, and I'm trying to save money.

So... I take it Plasma TV's are better than DLP and LCD? I'm not really in the know on any of this technology. Just want to make an educated purchase. Whatever I buy, I plan to have for atleast 4-5 years.

you can get a pretty decent lcd for your price range. plasmas are going to cost a lot, but in 4 years they'll be decent on prices.

If you'll find a good deal on a plasma or LCD $1500 or below, let me know also.

LCD + DLP is the way to go.

TV techs tell me Plasma is still throwaway technology. They screens don't last as long as LCD although they are brighter.

For $1000-$1500 I would go with a 42" panasonic plasma. For the best purchase in your price range, panasonic plasma will give you the best picture over any competitors tv. Panasonic plasma will give you brighter white and deeper blacks. You don't want to go with lcd over 32", why basically when you go bigger the contrast and resolution we be worse. LCD and Plasma lifespan are actually about the same, they last about 60,000 hours. It really depends what you are using the tv for. With plasma you can watch basic analog channel and it will actually look decent. With lcd it will look really pixelated, and the picture will be distorted. Let me know if I can help you out!
