Looking to buy new big screen TV

I would never buy a TV from a major retailer like bestbuy, circuit city, etc. You can save hundreds or even thousands when purchasing from a reputable online seller.

OMG...another one of these threads....
Let me settle this right now....
DLPs are bleh....dont bother.
Plasmas are.....
Better picture quality than LCDs, cheaper than LCDs (especially 42"+) require a breakin.....not good for videogames, eat a lot of electricity
LCDs
Longer life, no breakin required/no burn in, and good for videogames.
THATS IT. Plasma is a better technology than LCD, period.
So, again, if you just watch movies/sports, and dont play videogames, plasmas are better in every single category.
Panasonic and Pioneer are the industry standard. A nice Panasonic 42" can be had for $1300 or so, and a 50" for about $2K
Also, LCDs are very sensitive to the quality of parts/production. Thus, cheap LCDs look TERRIBLE. If you do want an LCD, only get SONY. They are the only company that SOLELY makes LCDs (they stopped producing plasmas) and are giving it their all for LCD technology. However, expect to pay twice for every square inch vs a plasma, for a picture that is 90% as good as plasma.
Also, if you have a hometheater setup (doesnt need to be fancy...just a stereo near the TV you can use for sound) you dont even need a regular plasma.....you can get a commercial monitor. It is just a plasma with no features...just a display.
Here are some examples.....
Pioneer 42" Commercial Monitor

Pioneer 42" with regular home TV features.... see the price difference? If you dont need all the stuff it comes with, then the commercial is for you....why pay for something you wont use?

These IMHO are the best plasmas you can get other than the Pioneer Elite line (which is $$$$$)
Panasonik UK series commercial monitors.....AMAZING display, but nothing else. No speakers, nothing. (you can get upgrade boards for these TVs, including wifi)
Panasonic 42" commercial monitor

Panasonic 50" commercial monitor

P.S. Commercial monitors are about 1/2 the weight of regular plasmas.

If I were going for an LCD (which I did), I'd get a Samsung model. They offer the best PQ that I've seen. Sony's BRAVIA is garbage.
I don't think there are any 1080p plasmas.
There is a Toshiba with a 1280*1024 resolution, which is F'd up in a 16:9 display. 1080p means 1920*1080 native.
There are some sweet 40" 1080P LCDs at about $2K and 50" 1080p DLPs at $1800.
My brother got a Samsung 42" 720p DLP for about $1100 today and it looks great.
IMO, DLPs are, assembly-wise, simple devices and thin enough. They're pretty light, too. DLP or Sony's SXRD are what I'll probably get.
I'd only go LCD or Plasma if you had to hang it up.
