Your differential will typically make a noise at specific speeds, not at specific RPMs. The faster you are going, the faster the diff is spinning, regardless of gear and engine RPM. RPM dependent noises will eminate from the front half of the tranny (gears, input shaft & associated bearings), the clutch, or engine. Speed dependent noises typically come from the output shaft of the tranny and associated bearings, the drive shaft, differential, L/R axles, wheels, brakes.

Yes they do

In gear or out of gear (in neutral)?

In gear makes me think clutch-buzz.

Out of gear could be driveline related as vtec9 mentioned.

I guess "we" need more info on when you hear the noise, driving straight, while cornering, braking, etc..

When was the last time the diff oil was changed and with what kind of oil?

only happens when i float the pedal. coasting.

light accel, light decel

in all speed from 30km-80km

Whirr whirrr noise, like something is rubbing metal to metal bearing noise...

Instead of road test, I heard there is another easier test for the diff. by jacking up the car and push the wheel and the other wheel shouldnt move or should move as well?

please advice,

Thank you.

Wow, good description, I have the exact same thing. Very easy to duplicate if I leave the car in 6th and go about 55mph and "float" the pedal just like you describe. I can hear a whirring sound from the diff, it's been there since I've had the car. I always chalked it off as a normal noise. The noise is still there in between fresh diff fluid changes, I just put a quality 80w90 oil in the rear and the noise is the same. Car has 16,500 miles, I don't race it and I've never dumped the clutch.

Diff test is: engine off, raise rear wheels, car in gear, turn one wheel, other wheel should turn opposite without noise.
It makes a difference if the diff is cold or warm.

Oil question wasn't answered though.

So what's the deal then is this normal for our cars? Or is something wrong?
