how to test your diff for noise?

I have same noise, but mine can be LOUD, if I "float" the pedal right. I definatly broke something in mine, because it never made the noise until I put it in 2nd instead of 4th.... I'm getting it fixed one way or another, I'll try and let you knwo If I can ever figure out what it is.. Because its not my diff gears, checked those..

A healty diff makes little or no noise during the diff test.
It should all feel smooth, certainly not crunchy.

I'd rather have found a destroyed gear parts, then I coulkd just fix it, and be done..... Oh well, onward I go..

It makes a difference if the diff is cold or warm.

Interesting, I just did the 'test', no noise at all and very smooth. Even turned one wheel while holding the other to see what would happen. (Strangely, I felt little to no increase in how difficult it was to turn the wheel by hand.) But, start the car, put it in 6th and press the gas...and it starts whining. Not near as loud as when I'm actually driving but definitely present. Now I just wonder what part of the diff is actually gone. Can I just change the gears and be done, or is the diff itself actually worn out and need replacement?
