Default Car # 11

This is the 11th car I've found with broken retainers during routine valve adjustment.

MY2000, 50k miles, 2nd owner. As usual, second retainer from the rear was the worst. 5 out of 8 intakes were showing recessed keepers, and were cracked.

Guy had a big list....did the retainers tonight, he'll grab a hotel and come back tomorrow to finish fluids, repair suspension, and rear brake issue.

Car was sent away with 2.2 retainers and keepers on the intake side, and one intake valve spring. The one retainer was really bad, and the spring got etched up from touching the rocker.

Yes it's very possible. I've got 80k on my car and I run it harder than anyone I know. I've also check many cars with 100k and no issues.

My car has been a good basis that that this is caused by an over-rev.

^ possible yes. But it is so easy to check them, and fairly cheap to have them checked as opposed to the money it could cost you it a valve fell in and said hello to the piston.

I haven't really checked yet...BUT...the 2nd intake retainer from the back is always the worst. I'm wondering if it could be checked with a mirror through the oil cap hole.

Billman, have you ever seen retainer damage on an AP2?

No. And I'm quite confident I never will.
