Default What makes an s2k so "heavy"

Hey guys, I was just wondering what exactly is it about the s2000 that makes it so heavy when compared to a miata for example. 2800+ Just seems like alot for such a small 2 seater Is it the subframe and extra braces that makes it more than 500lbs more than a miata?

Not a bad question.

1) How about the automatic/electric soft top.
2) Nice Leather seats

I think it could weigh about 300lbs less, but it would not be as nice.

Bigger wheels, bigger brakes, intergrated roll hoops, the windsheild frame looks a lot more beefy in the S2000.... Stuff like that would be my guess.

Maybe just the overall size the S2000 is a bigger car than the miata

Yeah thinking about it now its probably the roll hoops and I think the metal around the windshield is suppose to hold the weight of the car so it should be pretty strong. The motors of the soft top dont weigh more than 10lbs so its not that. Also the NB miatas came with 16" wheels.

The reason I ask is because I was looking at some random car weights and I saw a mustang GT with a freaking V8 only weighs about 3100lbs and that car is huge compared to ours.

Ever driven a miata? It wobbles like pam anderson doing a 100 yard dash.

The S2000 has a structural backbone. More steel = more weight, but more stiffness.

The S2000 feels like driving a solid chunk of metal compared to a miata. The miata feels hollow and noodle like compared to an S2000.

That makes up a majority of it.

It's also a bigger car. Bigger wheels. Bigger brakes. Power soft top.

Put an S2000 next to a miata. The S2000 is noticeably bigger. It's more substantial than a miata.

The miata is a little heavy for it's size as well, though. Convertibles have to have extra bracing for the lack of a roof. The Miata is available as a coupe in japan as well...the coupe is probably lighter. Think about it. Miatas weight in at about 2400-2500 lbs for the 2nd gen car. A much much larger civic hatchback weighs in at around 2300lbs or so. An 88-91 hatchback weighs in at about 1900-2000lbs.

Convertibles are heavy.

The Miata also has an Iron block. Aluminum is 3x lighter than steel. Factor in the extra metal needed for extra strength, and the S2000's engine is probably still about 100lbs or so lighter than the Miata's.

Despite that, The Miata vs. S2000 weight argument is easily understood even when you just physically see a miata next to an S2000...even without comparing equipment.

Here's a mind blower, though. My S2000 weighs more than my 99 Si.

Mustangs weigh closer to about 3500lbs.

Yeah, I don't mind the extra weight of the windshield frame... I saw pictures of a rolled S2000, and it looks like the frame did a lot to keep the driver alive.

One thing I wish was an option that was weight saving, having a manual top. In the new Miata you can throw the top down with one hand from inside the car, pretty sweet.

...pretty much agree with everyone else on why it weighs more.

I was going off this http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/spec_Ext...stang&trimid=-1

They range from 3100 to 3700 (for the v8 convertables). I just checked the weight for a GT coupe since my friend has one and wants to race so just doing some comparisons. Still seems like that car should weigh alot more.
