Welcome to the 21st Century. The technology exist for air liners to fly them selves from point A to point B with out a pilot and land in what is referred to as zero zero visibility conditions.

Therefore the technology exist to program an F1 car to run a "perfect" race in theory. But as we motorheads all know, that does not exist. The changing conditions, track and ambient temperatures that affect not only engine performance (which telemetry can track) and adjust for. Can not quite match up for changing track temps coupled with changing tire ware that only a "driver" has a "feel" for.

The US Airway crash on the Hudson is a good example of this. The Pilots are there to make human decisions that are "seat of the pants". And that human computer programmers can NOT count on happening. There are too many scenarios that could happen that a human that has to be the one to do the programming to begin with can not anticipate IMHO.

actually it's been kinda cool watching the DARPA grand challenge evolve over the last few years.
They've gotten them to the point of engaging in real traffic with unplanned obstructions etc.
they can get up to a whopping 30 mph.

makes you appreciate how much processing is wrapped up in your cranium.

The RC car is an awesome idea. I'm glad that Mclaren invited them to the test track in Portugal! Cool Idea with F1 car!
as mentioned earlier it works in theory under pre-programmed conditions, the human element keeps the racing exciting!
Can you imagine if that system was created as a backup system for the driver (in that rare hypothetical situation when they pass out!)??? I can just imagine someone hacking into that system and crashing all the cars he/she doesn't like during the race!!
