japan is stupid expensive to stay for more than a week i think. especially in the metro area.
and this is coming from a guy just a swim away.
In all honesty, Japan is expensive depending on how you look at it. Your major cost is going to be transportation and food.
I would get a rail pass, it saved us on our trip. If your going to be in Tokyo, you will mainly be using the JR Rail line (its the green track). We paid about 350$ for ours 2 years ago. Basically its your ride the train for free pass in Japan. If you think you'll be using the trains alot in Tokyo, get one.
Cabs weren't too expensive, but each trip adds up.
Eat the food there too, you can't compare it to what we have here. Authentic Japanese food is amazing. American food is over priced and expensive over there.
Stay away from Pachinko, its very confusing and you will spend lots of money trying to figure it out.
Last but not least, all the major hotels in Tokyo have tour and guide information in their lobbies. I suggest you take a tour. We did two (Tokyo tour and Mt Fuji Tour). The Mt. Fuji tour was great, some of the sites were amazing. The Tokyo tour was nice also, it dumped us off at Ginza for the last stop.
Anyway, have fun because I'm jealous your going. I want to go back their so bad. You'll be fine in Tokyo, get lost and explore. Theirs signs in english and some people can understand basic english.
Here's the pics I took...
