Default Doing better with food photography!

Hey guys,

I posted a few months back (possibly August?) - asking for food photography tips. A lot has happened since then, and I wanted to share my progress!

In august, I picked up a refurbished Canon Xsi with a kit lens. I shot this for 2-3 months as it was, and studied up on photography basics. I also picked up David Busch's field guide for the Xsi, and read through the first half of the book (the basics and also control over the manual settings).

In November, I got my second lens as a birthday present - a 50mm f2.5 EF Macro lens. Boy, does this thing shoot great close-up photos! The bokeh is nice for the food shots, and although I'm not thrilled by the crazy sounding auto focus, I'm mostly focusing manually anyway.

In December, I used birthday money for a Speedlite EX 430 II, and also got a 50mm f1.8, and a 55-250 EF-S lens too.

Then about a week ago, I decided to upgrade my body to the T1i which shoots video as well as stills. I couldn't be happier - the array of lenses combined with the great entry level body has been superb for our blog. I wanted to share with you guys some more recent stuff. Always open to constructive criticism if you have it - some of the recommendations you guys gave early on really helped me along my way.

ohhh the 50mm macro...

I got a jewelry shoot coming up and Ive been looking around for macro lenses. This one looks fantastic. great work!

Glad to see your sticking with it. Your pics look good but and I preach caution here be sure you don't get stuck in the macro mode, your pics above are borderline on being shot too tight, also keep in mind drawing the viewer into the shot. The last shot with the sushi those chopsticks leading the frame are really distracting the viewer from the food. The one above that the dessert try a little lower angle highlighting more of the dessert and less of the plate.

The collage shot above that, nicely done

The first 2 well done, and a good example of what I am saying about the dessert shot but just a tad more food in focus would be better. Your doing well keep it up.

Well, thats good news for me, then. The two top ones and the collage were shot within the last 3 weeks, sushi was shot in december, and the ice cream was shot all the way back in october or september. Sounds like the correct progression haha!

I'm, indeed, trying to get better at framing and composition. I want to spend less time editing and more time eating the damn food.

Very nicely done. I like the collage shot. Very well put together.

i like the vid and at 1:30 or so when you sprinkle the salt (or whatever it is) its so clear you can see each grain

The photos of food that you posted over here is looks very nice and yummy. Such a nice photography by you. I like your skill. I really appreciate for it.

My only recommendation would be slightly less OOF material. You want SOME depth of field, but not too much where you can barely make out the dish.
