I've always wanted an s2k, and looks like I'll finally have the means to afford one. Since ill be graduating within a year, I'll hopefully be making anywhere from 40-60k, with a more reasonable figure around 50, pretax. Is this enough to afford an s2000, and live comfortably? I've heard that a car should never exceed 1/3 of your annual income, and if this holds true, I shouldn't even think about a new one.

Btw I plan on renting an apartment, paying for food and expenses, and being financially independent of my parents. Is this a feasible task, or am I doomed with driving a civic for another few years? I really want this car, but don't want to put myself in a financial burden with a 34k car (I prefer new, although I'll consider a slightly used 05 with low mileage)

I know I'll probably get replies telling me to invest and save my money, but I am in love with this car
Where do you live? I currently share an apartment with a roommate, and after all expenses (rent, bills, food, car payments, maintenance, insurance, gas, 401k, etc etc), I don't have too much money left over each month. There was no way I could afford a brand new s2k without a much larger down payment (think $15k or more).

Honestly, I would look into getting a used s2k if you can. There are plenty of lower mileage ones around--just make sure to have it inspected before you purchase. You can save yourself a good amount of money, and not have to live paycheck to paycheck. I'd hate to see a thread posted in the next few months saying that you have to sell your brand new S due to financial circumstances....

19 years old and license suspended, Alex? Man, I think you need to get those priorities in check. No offense, but your situation sounds bad.
Got lied to by cops numerous times about where I can take care of a BS ticket, blah blah, eventually forgot about it and supposedly i was notifed by miami clerk of court and was unknowingly driving for 3 months with a suspended license. but 2 more weeks and I'll be good to go again

I am new here and just browsing the forums before I jump into an s2000 myself. I am in the same position as OP and I'm going to be graduating from college soon also. With an average expected income ranging from anywhere from 40k-60k and living in cali, by no means does that make you a "baller" But it will be a decent amount of money for a starting income.

If OP can find a way to reduce his costs of living by trying to share a room with a friend or two or find some relatives that can rent a room out; that will definitely help. Or if he has a GF, move in with her and split the costs with her lol.

When I graduate in about 4 months, I'll be looking for a used s2k myself, probably MY02+. I have looked around on autotrader and craiglist (SF area and OC area) for some s2k's and saw some prices ranging from 15-20k. Looking now and seeing if the opportunities will allow me to purchase in the future. =)

OP I suggest you do the same and buy used. A college graduate shouldn't be burden with a car note especially with many other financial responsibilities.

The choice is really yours. Obviously the fun factor is important, but at the same time you don't want to be stressed out about bills every day. You should think about how your income grows down the road. Sometimes it's not about what you earn now, but what you will earn -- you need to be realistic though.

Just remember that your projected cost of owning the S2000 would most likely be higher than you expected initially; gasoline consumption would be higher (due to more spirited driving), and you should consider "unexpected costs" such as break pads, mods (doesn't have to be big ... but like nicer floor mats and a shift knob could easily add to the bill), and (knock on the wood) maybe even speeding tickets.
