Considering getting my first s2000 - Advice?
Hey there guys, first off I'd like to introduce myself - My name is Nick, I am 19, and a currently a proud owner of a WRB 2003 Subaru WRX. Lately, I've had a rough time with police and patrol in my state and I am extremely unhappy with how owners of my sort of car are treated and profiled against. Therefor, I am put into this very sad action. Which would be getting rid of my dream car. Although it may be a sad thing to let her go, it also gives me an opportunity to get another car I've always had a feeling for. Right now, I am very very attached to my WRX, but I cannot afford any more outrageous tickets from the law. That is why I am making the choice to get another vehicle. Unfortunately, there are no s2000's for sale in my valley, nor younger enthusiasts my age, so it's a little more on my own to do the research and possibly travel quite awhile to obtain one. I would just curious about really any input you have regarding your s2000, pro's/con's, which year your prefer? I'm either going to have around 10-13k to spend if I sell my WRX, or trade directly. Right now I'm just testing the waters, but like I said. S2000's are very appealing to me right now and I am torn between an S2K or either a BMW e36 m3.
Thanks in advance for your input.

Where do you live? and what makes you think an s2000 will attract less police attention? I think a camry or '94 ford windstar would be a better "less ticketed" choice... Now if we disregard your accessive ticketing issue, you'll enjoy the s2k waaaay more than ur subie, its just the way it is... I had a '05 rex and nothing compares to the S
i have to say, s2000 gets WAAAAAY more unwanted attention than any subaru. compound that with you needing to travel far to pick one up... that's just tells me EVERYONE will be looking at you when you roll by cuz they probably never seen it before.... you SURE you want THAT much attention?
like togue said.. you might be better off looking at cars that doesn't scream "look at me"... just a thought.

Yeah, I agree that the Subaru is a "sleeper" car that doesn't attract attention considering its speed. It is your driving habits that are the issue. If you drive like that in an S2000, you will get even more attention. Isn't that obviouis?
Please guys, do not assume I am a reckless driver before hearing me out. Let me go in depth with my last two tickets:
A couple months ago - I was coming back from a party with a full car and I blinkered and made a turn ( going 3mph under the speed limit ) and a cop pulls me over. I ask what probable cause he had and replied " Your rear plate lights were out. " ( I was unaware, I knew one was out the day before. ) He then stepped out for 10 minutes and ran my car. Two other cops show up and I have 3 cop cars blocking my car in in this alley way far far out in the boonies. I waved the officer over to my car and politely asked what reason did he really have to pull my car out? And in his OWN words he replied " Well, your car is very suspicious. The hood scoop, huge wing, blacked out tails, black wheels, your car was dirty, it was obvious you were up to know good. Right when we saw your car we were stoked, and were like DUI, MIP, MIP, MIP!" I honestly was shocked by the response the officer gave me. We all then took a sobriety test and blew 0's after an hour and a half and I received a $300 ticket for having my rear license plate lights out. Not a fix-it ticket, the real deal.
Last week - I was going to Portland with a couple friends and we were on our way to a show and I got lasered by a patrol officer. There were 3 lanes on the high-way and 5 different cars around me, one on the left, the right and 3 in-front. I notice a car approaching me at a very fast speed, and move to the center lane. He tail-gates me super close (about 7ft away) I assume he's a reckless driver and just try to ignore him keeping my speed at 70MPH. Then he flashes his lights on, I pull over. The officer said he got me going 74mph back there, which was true I guess. I was going between 65-75. And the officer claimed it was a 60MPH zone not a 65MPH. I didn't see a single sign stating 60MPG and didn't even know there was a 60MPH zone for cars besides trucks ( I drive to Eugene/Portland couple times a week and they were doing construction maybe it changed?) Anyway, the 5 other vehicles were all passing me when I got lasered, they were all going atleast 78+ and obviously the officer pulled me out of the crowd. My Garmin GPS said it was a 65 zone and right after we left we saw a 65MPH sign and checked the markers on the way back, there were no 60 zones until we hit Salem.
I know we could we talk about cops all day, sure everyone of you guys has a story. But I'm not trying to tap off a prejudice feelings towards cops, like everyone else. there are good and there are not so good. It's just unfortunate they assume my parents pay for everything and I am spoiled teenager. I work 7 days a week and pay for food, gas, and everything that is put on my vehicle. I find it hilarious I got a $300 ticket for my bulb being out. Thank you officer, you taught me a grand lesson. I just lost half my pay check for two weeks, no food nor gas. It's also funny that every officer has stated " We're just teaching you a lesson. " What lesson was I taught? My bulb burns out when I am behind the wheel, interesting. To me, these cops are no good. My friend who also owns a Subaru got a $200 ticket because his blinker flashed two times and is supposedly suppose to flash 3 times? I didn't even read that law.
I'm one of the few who own a WRX who are a responsible driver. None of you know me, nor do I know you. just trust the fact that I say so, and be mature about it.. So far the responses are highly disappointing. I've owned my WRX for exactly 1 year today and haven't a single idiotic action with it, it's sad that 95% of WRX's are totaled and give everyone a bad rep. I am a spirit driver, not a ignorant show boat. I've also noticed every single ticket has been given at the very end of the month when cops need to rack them up.
Sleeper? Here in my area WRX's are more of the teenage race car. STi Wing is definitely not a sleeper aesthetic piece.
That's just my side of some of my passed incidents with police.
But back to getting an S2000. I'd like to hear about having one as a daily driver, differences between years, Ap1/Ap2? Mods? etc!

Hey man, I live in Southern Oregon. Haha, personally I would choose the Prius or a PT Cruiser as my sleeper. And thank you for not jumping to the conclusion of myself being a reckless driver. I tend to never go past 10 over the speed limit, usually around 6-8 over. great to find a previous WRX owner. I see you live in Oregon as well. How does it like the winter? It's a N/A vehicle, not nearly as loud, no wing, doesn't carry a horrible reputation with young drivers, and a lot of old people own s2000's
Cops may conclude it's a Miata for all I know. Here's a photo of how my car is now. I don't find it a sleeper.

I don't want a ricey S2K, simple, nice stance, hard top would be nice. very fond of the Mugen.

Dang man, 19 years old and driving a WRX. That must be nice. Maybe you should be happy you have a sweet car, and just relax wiht your driving some. I know friends of mine would always get tickets in their Integras or riced out civics, but it's because they're 'those kind of cars.' I never had a 'fast car.' My parents bought me a clean Crx and then told me that was the last car they were buying me. Maybe you could just save a grand or two and buy a cheap civic and drive that regularly, then have your WRX for a weekend car? That's what I plan to do when I get an S2000, not to mention make my CRX stock again!!!
Edit: sorry, that came out wrong. Just saying since your WRX is your dream car, why not try to find a way to keep it?

Wow... Try driving like a regular person when your in the streets and maybe you won't be getting any tickets. Just a suggestion.

and welcome....
