Current MR2 turbo owner considering an 'S
Hi all,
Been lurking for a while and just signed up. Had an MR2 turbo for about 4 years, bought it bone stock and done a fair bit to it, but kept a reasonably oem look. Riding on KW coilovers, volk GT-C wheels and basic BPU mods.
Currently off the road with a clutch problem but getting sorted in the new year, and i'm considering getting something new.. just for a change really. Been looking at the Exige (NA and FI) but prices are quite high still ~20k for the Exige S.
I've always liked the styling on the S2000 since i saw one in a honda dealer circa '99, i've heard they drive pretty well and i dont have a problem with 2 seats (Coming from the mr2).
Any ex MR2 turbo owners on here? What are your thoughts about going to the S2000 from one? Handling differences, faster/slower in a straight line/corners, running costs etc.
If i got one i'd be after grand prix white, with a hardtop (Would probably remove the softtop as i doubt i'd use the car without the hardtop, is this easy to do?) not too fussed on the year as from what i've read there arnt any major changes with the later models.. although i do prefer the later front bumper.
Anyway,
hello!
Heres a pic of the mr2

Nice MR2. I'm a former MR2 Spyder owner "far different from your beast"
. I'm sure the S would be a great transition. It's also a great platform to go FI on as well. Having been in other FI S2K's it turns an already great car into a monster
Thanks Craig, i will be considering FI at some point if i were to get an 'S, probably a garett GT30 turbo kit, something along those lines.. but thats a while away at the moment!
Seems the grand prix white ones are a little thin on the ground here in the UK, plenty in silverstone tho!

Hey, my brother has a 91 MR2 Turbo. His is mostly stock exept for a blitz nur spec exhaust. He loves the car but he is always wanting to drive my S, lol. He is actually considering selling the mr2 and getting an S also. So im sure you would be happy with it, to me its funner to drive than the mr2. I say get it, you wont regret it!

Nice mr2! I am on my 7th MK1 currently and used to own a 93T. The S2000 is very nice in its own way compared to the MR2. It is more go-kart like than the MK2 MR2 but less so than the MK1. It definitely offers a driving experience quite different from either MR2. However, a well-sorted mr2 turbo with exhaust/boost controller will be substantially faster than the S2000 under any conditions, assuming no forced induction on the S2000. It is easy to drive hard in the S2000 on a road course in comparison to the MR2, as it is all around more forgiving due to the lack of torque.
The S2000 is less maintenance, and probably more reliable. It is also easier to work on, and parts are cheap. The interior is definitely nicer (my 93T was loaded).
Basically, you won't have as much grunt but you will still be having a blast stringing out the gears. I bought the car with the intention of adding a blower ASAP to make up for the "lack of power", but the car is just so much fun to drive that you don't even care that you aren't going that fast, much like in a MK1 MR2.
I have gutted the entire softtop setup to save weight. The only time the hard-top comes off is to work on or clean the interior. I wish they made a coupe version S2000. It was a bit of a PITA to do, but would be easy a second time. There are some old threads with pics on here that are helpful.

I know what you mean about not caring about the power tho, i've never been particularly into straight line grunt- but a a good twisty road its great to have a car you can really lean on- much more rewarding.
I'll search for the threads on softtop removal- ta!
