Default finally registered! i want an s2k!

What's up people. My name's Dek, I'm 19 and go to school at Gettysburg College. I've wanted an s2k for a long time, but I've been very happy in my Saab 92-x aero for the past two years. It was my first sporty car, and I had my first "learning experiences" in it. I learned that it wasn't safe to #### around on the street, so I got into autocrossing. I've gotten pretty good at that, and now this idea is idea has been floating around in my head that maybe i should try to trade in for an s2k! I'm looking for a used 02 or 03 to trade for, because I wouldn't be able to get an AP2 unless I got help from my mom (which I'd rather not do at this point). Here are some pics of my "saabaru":

and one vid: auto-x vid

Can you all direct me to a thread that has info on what to look for when purchasing a used s2k...at what mileage do you have to start shelling out big money for maintenance? Appreciate it...hopefully I find one sometime soon!

Nice looking car. The link below has a nice checklist - it was designed for new car pickup but works for used as well.

MY02-03 are nice choices, as they have some upgrades over the first couple years (glass rear window, leather console cover, etc) but still have the higher redline. About the only thing you have to watch out for are a couple TSB (most notably the infamous 'clutch buzz') and a tendency for some cars to burn oil. Other than this, these cars are very reliable. Be sure to check out insurance costs, as it is sometimes high for younger drivers. As for price, I'd guess you will be paying somewhere betwen $16k and $18k for a MY02-03 in good shape w/reasonable miles. Search around, winters a great time to buy. Cars show up fairly regularly on here in the sale forum, also plug into your local owners group (see the regional forums), as they are a great source of info. Finally, many members have found cars on Craigslist. Good luck, the car is truly happiest on the track.

Welcome to the site Dek! There's a lot of stuff in here, just search and ask... you will get your questions answered. 8_ball has a good list there, along with many excellent considerations. Here is a list more tailored to previously owned vehicles. Best wishes on the search.

Thanks...no I don't remember seeing any big group of s2k's around here, i definitely would remember if i had! So right now it looks like there's an '02 sebring with 56k for 15,400(good price, ok color), and an '03 berlina black with 49k for 16,900 (a little high for me). But if my car right now isn't completely paid off, how does the whole process work? If i get it appraised at car max, do I also have to buy a car from them as well. Or will they cut me a check so I can buy a car privately?

Nice Saabaru, never understood why they weren't more popular, in particular when GM offered that "you pay what we pay" campaign a few years ago.
