Just to let you know I felt the same way about the shifter and now have an axial flow short shifter and it made the shifts much more confident and feels more sync'd up to my liking. If the non driving aspects of the car are to your liking (looks, simple interior, convertable, small space), the driving impression/aspects over time, will only grow with appreciation , no need to worry about that.

The s2000 would seem to be a good fit for you. You said you fit well in the car and enjoyed it, so as long as it fits your life style and won't interfere you are making the right choice. z4's are really nice, so hopefully that doesn't make the decision harder for you once you drive one. Good luck with your decision.
