FNG in San Jose
The engine serial number is reputed to be on the back of the cylinder head, between the engine and the firewall. I write reputed 'cuz I've never seen it. Maybe I can look today.
Maybe with a mirror? Apparently the engine number should be within 10-15 of the chassis VIN stamped on the firewall for it to be an original engine.
Since the engine is from a salvage car you can use the engine number as a VIN-number on carfax-dot-com (a free site) and get data including mileage on the original car.

There were 2 especially useful threads I found before I actually went and looked for a car:

They should have most of the info and additional links you will ever need.

way helpful, thanks. And i got a partial s/n off the engine. And I bought the Carfax. It said it was in a flood. Stupid Carfax
Drove up and down Mt Hamilton last Sunday. 20 miles, 4000 vertical, 364 turns each way. Big fun. It has been raining as of late so I do not go out and play so much. The trunk seems to not be watertight. Comments?
Also, a friend recommended a front shock tower brace. I have not found that yet on the forum. Comment 2?
Im still working on the registration here in California. What a hassle. You guys rock.

Water in the trunk commonly comes in from where the roof and body meet. There are drains on both sides which will fill up with dust, dirt, pollen, etc and prevent training. A poorly installed replacement roof is notorious for flooding the trunk when it rains or you simply wash the car.
Search for "roof drains," there are probably 100s of posts and some photos.
