Found my Unicorn at the Hooptie Auction
So, I've been casually looking for one for years, but not real serious about spending Porsche money on a Honda. I own a small car lot and inevitably have accumulated some of my favorites over the years for my personal collection. Its an eclectic bunch but they all rub me in the right spots. Had a Miata but it left me bored, loved my the 944S2 cabrio but feared the Mount Saint Helens under the bonnet, Gen I MR2 supercharged was an automatic.... I have a nice grouping of vehicles but no sports car to toss around until last week.
Depending on the experience I call my local dealer auction "The Turd Hunt" or "Another Episode of Moron Theatre". Sometimes there's nothing but discarded garbage, other weeks some decent vehicles, but morons paying so much there's no hope of a profit. Somehow I find things worth buying and make out a living. Anywho, on to the car...
Last week sitting in one of the primo new franchise dealer trade lane, here she was. Red, slightly tatty, but nothing out of place. I had never come across one at this auction before. Vehicle history did not come back with 8 owners and wrecked. 'Yee gads!' I thought. That's a surprise. Bone stock as well, other than the obligatory K&N intake. 129,000 miles. scratched up on the bumpers, a few little nits. Never in the some odd years I had been doing this had a S2000 ran through the auction, period. This was my unicorn, the car I had driven and from that moment on coveted like the wrinkly Lord of the Rings pigmy... now would it go for a decent price?
My expectations were not high, since I witnessed a E36 M3 bring above what I could buy one out on the street for just a few weeks earlier. Thankfully this car had enough minor cosmetic/mechanical issues to scare off the morons. It usually doesn't take long for these idiots to run out of money, but like the Hydra once its head gets chopped off 2 or more are quick to return in its place. Came down to just me and a Tapout clad gentleman who probably never got within 10 feet of it, let alone a thorough inspection. Thankfully a friend whispered in his ear early in the bidding process and he bowed out. I came out on top for a legitimate wholesale price.
Holy $*@# Batman this thing is just as good as I remember. With minimal sorting this car will look and drive showroom despite the miles.
I'm very happy to finally be a part of the club. Welcome me!
